Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Wood Type" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a county fair handbill set by a job printer from a case of wood type. Manila poster stock, two inks, mixed display faces, stars and brass rules. Loud, cheerful and confident, yet clean enough to read at a glance.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Stock: #EFE2C4 (warm manila) with a faint warm grain.
- Letterpress red: #C23A2B. Dense warm black: #1D1A17. These are the only inks; the stock shows through as the third color (reversed type on the red banner).

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Ultra for the giant key word of the headline (78px, red, 2px letter-spacing, uppercase), the value figures above the bars (27px, 34px for the peak), the category labels (19px uppercase, 1.5px letter-spacing, black) and the banner line (15 to 17px uppercase, 2 to 3px letter-spacing, in stock color on red).
- Abril Fatface for the second line of the stacked headline (38px, black, lowercase sentence), completing the finding ("SATURDAY / drew the biggest crowd of the week").
- Zilla Slab for small print: subtitle 600 16px, secondary labels such as dates 500 14px, source italic 500 13px, and a red 600 12px uppercase note with 2px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- 40px side margins. A row of brass-rule dashes at the top (15 x 3px black dashes every 22px) at y 26, then a full-width red banner (36px tall at y 42) with the event name left, "SEVEN DAYS ONLY" centered between two stock-colored five-point stars (r 9), and the dates right.
- The stacked, centered headline: Ultra key word at y 164 flanked by two black stars (r 17), then the Abril line at y 214. Under it the centered subtitle at y 243 between two short double rules (3px plus 1.2px, 120px long).
- Chart from about y 300 to the baseline at y 494, labels below it, a second row of brass dashes at y 556 and the footer at y 584.

Axes and grid:
- No y-axis, no gridlines: every bar carries its value. A heavy double rule for the baseline (5px black, then a 1.6px black rule 8px below it) running the full width.

Marks:
- Bar chart: flat, square-cornered solid rectangles about 68% of the band (76px for 7 bars), alternating red and black. The value sits 12px above each bar in Ultra in the bar's own ink, the peak value larger. Category label in Ultra 19px, 30px below the baseline, with a small Zilla Slab date or detail under it.
- Line chart: a 6px black line with square joins across the same double-rule baseline, each point marked by a 14px solid red square, values in Ultra above the points alternating red and black, and the peak point marked with a black star (r 12). Keep the headline, banner and dash rows exactly as for bars.

Texture:
- One impression filter over all display ink: displace edges with fractal noise (base frequency 0.8) at scale 1.6, then punch small speckles out of the ink where coverage thins: threshold fine noise (base frequency 0.55, alpha = 11 * noise - 7) and keep only the speckles inside broad patches (base frequency 0.035, alpha = 1.4 * noise - 0.55), removing them from the ink. Small print stays crisp.

Avoid: gradients, drop shadows, rounded corners, more than two inks, thin hairline type, gridlines, and a legend (label every bar directly).

When you're done, render the chart and check that the stars never touch the banner text, the headline states a finding that is true for the data, the speckle reads as worn ink rather than dirt, and nothing crosses the brass dash rows.
