Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Lane Splits" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the official results sheet of a swimming final. Bright pool water, lane ropes and lane lines, crisp condensed labels, and one winner's line that clearly leads.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #E6F3F8 (pale pool blue) for the whole canvas.
- Gridlines: #7CC4DA (aqua), styled as lane lines.
- Series, in finishing order: #1D3557 (navy, the winner), #D62839 (lane-rope red), #149A8B (teal), #E07B16 (orange).
- Title ink #12283F; secondary text #4F6B7E; lane rope dashes #D62839 on #FFFFFF.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Barlow Condensed 600 for the eyebrow (14px, uppercase, 2.2px letter-spacing, red) and x-axis step labels (13px, uppercase, 1.2px letter-spacing).
- Barlow for everything else: title 700 30px stating the finding; subtitle 400 16px with measure, unit and reading direction; axis values 500 13px; end values 700 18px (22px for the winner); end names 500 12.5px; source and footer 12px.

Layout:
- 40px side margins. A lane rope across the top (y 38) and bottom (y 556): an 8px tall white rounded strip with red dashes 22 on, 22 off and a 0.8px navy outline at 35% opacity.
- Eyebrow at y 76, title at y 116, subtitle at y 144. Plot from x 96 to 770, y 188 to 500; a right column from x 792 holds end labels. Footer text at y 584 under the bottom rope: source left, a small note right.

Axes and grid:
- Y axis is time per length, inverted so faster is higher. Whole-second gridlines 1.4px #7CC4DA solid; half-second gridlines 0.8px dashed 3 on 5 off. Labels right-aligned 14px left of the plot with one decimal.
- One thin vertical aqua line per step (0.6px, 70% opacity), like lane markers at each wall.
- X labels two lines: "TURN 1" ... "TURN 7" and "FINISH" (red), with the distance ("50 m") below in 12px muted.

Marks:
- Line chart: straight segments, round joins. Winner 5px with solid 4.5px radius dots; others 2.4px with hollow dots (3.2px radius, 2px stroke, page-colored fill). Draw the winner last so it sits on top. At each line end, a 1px leader to a label block: final time in the series color, then "place. name lane" in ink; dodge blocks at least 46px apart.
- Bar chart: vertical bars 60% of the band in the same four colors with 2px top-rounded corners, the leader's bars in navy and the rest lighter by order; values above each bar in Barlow 600 13px; keep the aqua lane-line grid and lane-rope rules.

Labels and annotation:
- One bracket annotation above the plot: a 1px navy line with 8px end ticks spanning the relevant steps, broken by a 13px 600 navy label on a page-colored backing.

Avoid: gradients, shadows, drop caps, dark backgrounds, more than four series colors, a legend box (label line ends directly).

When you're done, render the chart and check that faster times sit higher, the winner's line is thickest and on top, end labels do not collide, and the margin in the title equals the difference of the final times.
