Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Vintage Scores" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the vintage chart page of a fine wine merchant's buying guide. Quiet, literate and precise: ivory paper, a classical serif headline, spaced small capitals and a thin gold frame, with each series in a wine-list color.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FAF6EE (ivory) for the whole canvas.
- Series, in order: #7B1E3A (claret), #B8923A (gold), #5B6770 (slate). Use them in this order for up to three series; a single series is claret.
- Title and key text: #2B2320 (ink). Secondary text, axis labels, source: #7A6F66.
- Gridlines: #E6DDCB. The plot frame, tick marks, header and footer rules and highlight columns use the gold #B8923A.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Cormorant Garamond: title 600 at 40px in ink, sentence case, stating the finding (its default old-style figures are welcome in the title); subtitle italic 400 at 19px in #7A6F66 with measure, unit and period; axis numbers 600 at 16px with lining figures (font-variant-numeric: lining-nums); key entries and source italic 400 at 14 to 15px.
- Josefin Sans set as spaced small caps (uppercase at small sizes): eyebrow 600 at 12px, 3.2px letter-spacing, claret, with a 40px 1px gold rule 14px below it; series labels 600 at 12px, 1.6px letter-spacing, in each series color; tiny labels ("POINTS", "KEY", highlight years) 10 to 11px with 1.5 to 2.4px letter-spacing; folio at 10px.

Layout:
- 64px left margin. Eyebrow at y 58, title baseline at y 116, subtitle at y 146.
- The plot sits inside a thin gold double frame: an inner 0.8px #B8923A rectangle and a second 0.4px rectangle 4px outside it at 70% opacity. The frame starts 16px above the top gridline.
- Direct series labels to the right of the frame, each joined to its line's last point by a 0.8px leader in the series color; the marker key sits above them, right of the frame.
- Footer: a 0.6px gold rule at y 548, italic "Source: ..." at left and a spaced small caps folio at right.

Axes and grid:
- No axis lines apart from the frame. Horizontal 1px #E6DDCB gridlines every 5 points; y labels right-aligned 14px left of the frame, with a tiny unit label ("POINTS") above them.
- X labels every fourth year, centered 24px below the frame, each with a 5px gold tick hanging from the frame.

Marks:
- Line chart: 2px lines in the series colors, gently smoothed with a monotone curve (no overshoot), round joins. A marker at every point, r 4.2 with a 1.6px stroke in the series color: filled with the series color when the vintage is ready to drink, filled with the ivory page (hollow) when it still needs cellaring. Draw claret last so it sits on top.
- Bar chart: slender square-cornered bars in the series colors (grouped side by side for several series), bars for vintages still to be cellared drawn hollow (ivory fill, 1.6px outline in the series color) and ready ones solid; value labels in Cormorant Garamond 600 above bars.
- Highlight the standout categories with a 22px-wide gold column at 10% opacity spanning the plot, labeled at its top in Josefin Sans 600 11px gold.

Key:
- "KEY" in Josefin Sans 10px with a 0.6px gold rule under it, then a filled ink circle "Drink now" and a hollow ink circle "Cellar" in Cormorant Garamond italic 15px, markers the same size as the chart's.

Avoid: heavy gridlines, drop shadows, gradients, saturated reds, bold sans titles, a boxed legend, and anything louder than the thin gold frame.

When you're done, render the chart and check that filled and hollow markers are clearly different at small size, lines don't hide each other's markers, the series labels clear each other and the frame, and the title's claim is true for the data.
