Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Dynamics Curve" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a conductor's study score. Engraved, quiet and exact: cream paper, black ink, staff-like hairlines, and one touch of red pencil where the conductor marked the climax. The value axis is read the way musicians read loudness, in dynamic markings.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F8F3E6 (score cream) for the whole canvas.
- Ink: #1A1714 for the title, the data line, axis line, tick marks, rehearsal boxes and hairpins.
- Staff hairlines and footer rule: #D8CFBD.
- Secondary text (eyebrow, axis captions, source, folio) and dotted section lines: #8A8175. Subtitle and tick numbers: #4A443C.
- Red pencil accent: #A8322D, used only for the highlighted rehearsal box and the peak annotation.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Libre Caslon Display 400 for the title, 36px, ink, sentence case, stating the finding.
- Crimson Text for everything else: eyebrow 12px 600 uppercase with 2.6px letter-spacing in #8A8175; subtitle 16.5px italic; value-axis markings (pp, p, mp, mf, f, ff) 22px 700 italic in ink, right-aligned 18px left of the plot; rehearsal letters 17px 700; tick numbers 14px; axis captions ("bar", "hairpins") 14px italic #8A8175; annotation 15px 600 italic plus 14px regular for its value; source and folio 13.5px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow at y 50, title at y 96, subtitle at y 126, then a double rule (1.2px over 0.5px, 4px apart) across the full width.
- Plot from x 128 to 900, y 196 to 452. A row of boxed rehearsal letters sits just above the plot. Below the plot: bar numbers, then a hairpin strip at y 500 labeled "hairpins" on the left.
- Footer: a 1px #D8CFBD rule at y 540, source on the left, italic folio on the right.

Axes and grid:
- Replace numeric y labels with dynamic markings placed at representative values (for loudness in dB(A): pp 45, p 53, mp 60, mf 67, f 75, ff 84) and state that mapping in the source line. Each marking gets a 0.9px #D8CFBD full-width hairline, like a staff line.
- A 1.2px ink baseline with 5px ink ticks every 40 bars and bar numbers centered 21px below. The word "bar" in italic sits in the marking column.
- Rehearsal letters: 22 x 24px boxes with a 1.3px ink stroke and cream fill, the letter centered in 17px 700, from each box a 0.8px dotted (2 on, 4 off) #8A8175 line runs down through the plot. The section that holds the finding gets a solid #A8322D box with a cream letter.

Marks:
- Line chart: one smooth line (monotone cubic, no overshoot) 2.4px ink with round joins and caps, over a very faint ink wash (fill #1A1714 at 5.5% opacity) down to the baseline. For several series, use ink for the main one and #8A8175 dashed (5 on, 4 off) for the others, labeled directly at their right ends in 14px italic.
- Bar chart: slender square-cornered ink bars (about 45% of the band) on the same staff hairlines, value markings or numbers above them in 14px Crimson Text; one highlighted bar in #A8322D at most.
- Hairpins: under the stretch where the line rises, draw a crescendo (two 1.3px ink strokes opening from a point to 18px wide); where it falls, a diminuendo (closing to a point). They start and end at the bars where each swell begins and ends and leave small gaps between them.

Labels and annotation:
- Mark the peak with a 5px cream circle ringed 2px in #A8322D, a short curved 1.2px red leader, and a two-line note ("Loudest, bar 244" and "86 dB(A)") in red Crimson Text.

Avoid: numeric y labels, colored backgrounds, gradients, shadows, rounded corners, sans-serif type, more than one red element group, and a legend box.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the dynamic markings sit exactly on their hairlines, every hairpin direction matches the line's rise or fall above it, the rehearsal boxes don't collide with the peak note, and the title's claim is true for the data.
