Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

  • Series orange#E3861B
  • Series green#0F9B7A

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Preprint Figure" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a figure lifted straight out of a scientific journal preprint. Pure white, compact, rigorous and unadorned: black axes, bold panel letters, marker-coded series and a numbered caption that carries the finding.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Canvas: #FFFFFF, no plot background and no border around the plot.
- Axes, ticks, text and panel letters: #1A1A1A.
- Series, in this order: #2A62B8 (blue), #E3861B (orange), #0F9B7A (green). Each series also gets its own marker shape so it survives grayscale printing.
- Secondary annotation text: #555555. Footer text and reference lines: #8A8A8A. Footer rule: #D0D0D0.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Arimo for every piece of text, 400 and 700 only.
- Panel letters: lowercase, 700, 24px, placed about 66px left of the panel's y axis and above its top.
- Panel titles: 400, 13px, just right of the y axis above the plot.
- Tick labels 12px; axis titles 12.5px; legend 12px with a 700 "Incubation"-style lead-in naming the grouping variable.
- Caption: first line 700 14px starting "Fig. 3 |" followed by one sentence stating the finding; following lines 400 12.5px describing panels ("a, ... b, ..."), replicates and error bars. Use real superscripts and subscripts (tspans with 8.5 to 9px text shifted 4 to 5px), never caret notation.
- Footer: 11px #8A8A8A.

Layout:
- A shared legend box centered above the panels: 330 x 30px, white fill, 0.8px #1A1A1A stroke, square corners, entries showing a 26px line segment with the series marker at its middle.
- Two side-by-side panels (a and b), each about 342px wide and 312px tall, starting around y 92, separated by about 130px so the second panel's y axis label fits. Same axes on both panels.
- The caption block below the panels starting around y 494 with 44px side margins, then a hairline rule and a footer row: "Source: ..." left, a small running folio right.

Axes and grid:
- No gridlines. Left and bottom axis lines only, 1px #1A1A1A; no top or right spines.
- Log-scale y axis when values span orders of magnitude: major ticks every decade (5px outward, 1px) labeled as 10 with a superscript exponent, minor ticks at 2 to 9 times each decade (2.5px outward, 0.7px).
- x axis major ticks 5px outward with labels, minor ticks 2.5px between them. Axis titles in plain words with units in parentheses, the y title rotated.
- An optional thin reference line: 0.8px #8A8A8A dashed 2 on 3 off, labeled at its right end in 11px #555555.

Marks:
- Line chart: 1.5px straight segments joining the mean at each sample time, with markers at every point: circle r 3.6, square 6.6px, upward triangle about 8.4 x 7.4px, each filled in the series color with a 0.8px white outline. Capped error bars in the series color, 1px, caps 5px wide, drawn under the markers.
- Bar chart: slim bars (about 60% of the band) filled with the series colors and no outline, grouped with 2px gaps, black 1px capped error bars (caps 6px), tick-and-label axes exactly as above, and the same legend box above and caption below.

Avoid: gridlines, background fills, rounded corners, shadows, titles above the figure (the caption carries the title), chart junk, caret exponents, and more than three hues.

When you're done, render the chart and check that each series is distinguishable by marker shape alone, the minor log ticks sit at the correct uneven spacing, error bars never hide the markers, superscripts render as superscripts, and the caption's claim is true for the data.
