Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Mortality Table" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an actuarial valuation report printed on pale ledger stock. A life table and its survival curve side by side, quiet, exact and slightly old-fashioned, the way a pension scheme's basis appendix looks.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #EEF2F4 (pale blue-gray ledger stock).
- Ink, primary series, table figures and rules: #23374D (slate navy).
- Comparison series: #A0523D (muted brick).
- Alternate table row banding: #E3E9ED. Gridlines and table column dividers: #C3CDD6.
- Secondary text (subtitle, axis labels, footnote): #5E6E7E.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Libre Caslon Text for words: title 400 at 29px in navy stating the finding; subtitle italic 15px #5E6E7E; direct series labels 13.5px; axis title italic 12.5px; footnote 11.5px, source italic 11.5px.
- Azeret Mono for every figure: table cells 11px (headers 600), axis tick labels 10.5px #5E6E7E, annotations 10.5px, the eyebrow 10.5px 500 uppercase with 1.4px letter-spacing, the table id at bottom right 10px with 1.6px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- 48px side margins. Eyebrow at y 50, title at y 90, subtitle at y 116, then a full-width 1.2px navy rule at y 136.
- The left third (about 236px wide) holds a narrow ruled table of the underlying values (for a mortality chart: age, qx to five decimals, lx with thousands separators) in rows about 20px tall, every other row banded #E3E9ED, a 1px navy rule under the header and at the bottom, and 0.8px #C3CDD6 vertical column dividers. Figures right-aligned.
- The plot fills the right two thirds (x 356 to 900).
- A double rule (two 0.8px navy lines 3.5px apart) closes the page at y 532, followed by a one-line "Basis:" footnote in 11.5px serif and the italic source line.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 0.7px #C3CDD6; the zero line a 1px navy baseline. Y tick labels right-aligned 10px left of the plot with thousands separators.
- X axis: 5px navy tick marks below the baseline every 10 units, labels 21px below.

Marks:
- Line chart: the primary series as a thin 1.8px navy step line (horizontal then vertical segments per period, no smoothing), with a hollow circle (r 4, page-colored fill, 1.4px navy stroke) every tenth period. The comparison series as a 1.6px brick step line dashed 6 on, 4 off. A dotted navy guide (0.8px, 1 on 3 off) from the y axis to the curve and down to the baseline marks a key threshold, labeled in 10.5px mono.
- Bar chart: slim square-cornered navy bars (about 45% of the band) with a hollow brick outline bar (1.4px, dashed 6 4) for the comparison value behind each, the same ledger table on the left listing the values.

Labels and annotation:
- Label series directly in the serif at 13.5px in their own colors, placed in clear space beside the curves; no legend box.
- One small mono annotation in brick quantifying the gap between the series at a meaningful point (for example "+5,047 at 85").

Avoid: fills under the curve, smoothing, glows, rounded corners, bright colors, sans-serif type, and gridlines inside the table.

When you're done, render the chart and check that table figures line up on their decimal points, the step line never smooths, table dividers do not cut through any numbers, and the title's claim matches the table.
