Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Quarterly Letter" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from an investment fund's quarterly letter to its investors, printed on cream laid paper. Quiet, literate and trustworthy: one typeface, a letterhead, footnote markers and a small-print disclaimer. It should read like a document, not a dashboard.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #F6F0E1 (cream), with faint horizontal chain lines in #E6DCC6 (0.8px, every 22px, at 70% opacity) and a very soft radial vignette toward #C9B994 at 22% opacity in the corners.
- Primary series (the fund, or my main series): #1F3358 (ink navy).
- Comparison series (benchmark, or my second series): #9A8F80 (warm gray).
- Body ink for the title, rules and reference line: #2B2722. Secondary text: #6F665A. Dotted gridlines: #CFC3AA.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- EB Garamond for everything, with old-style figures (font-variant-numeric: oldstyle-nums).
- Letterhead: fund or organisation name 15px 600 in small caps with 2.4px letter-spacing, navy, left; the document name ("Letter to Investors, Second Quarter 2026") 15px italic #6F665A, right.
- Title 33px 500 #2B2722, sentence case, stating the finding, ending with a superscript asterisk (21px, raised 12px, navy) that points to a footnote.
- Subtitle 19px italic #6F665A with measure, unit, base date and frequency, ending with a superscript dagger (13px, raised 7px).
- Axis labels 15px #6F665A; direct labels 16px 600 (name) over 15px regular (value), in each series' color; marginal notes 14px italic #6F665A; footnotes 12px #6F665A; disclaimer 12px italic.

Layout:
- 64px side margins. Letterhead at the top, then a double rule under it: 0.9px and 0.4px lines in #2B2722, 3.5px apart.
- Title, subtitle, then the chart from about x 96 to x 736, leaving the right 160px for direct end labels.
- Bottom: a short 136px 0.6px rule (a footnote separator), then the asterisk and dagger footnotes (one line each), then a two-line italic disclaimer paragraph ("Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results...") with a small page number at the far right. The source ("Source: ...") sits inside the first footnote.

Axes and grid:
- Y labels at left, right-aligned, no axis line. Gridlines 0.6px #CFC3AA dotted (1 on, 3 off).
- For index charts: a solid 0.8px #2B2722 reference line at the base value (100), with its label "100" in 600 weight ink.
- A 0.9px ink baseline with 5px year ticks and year labels 24px below.

Marks:
- Line chart: straight segments, round joins. Primary line 2.6px navy, comparison line 2px warm gray, drawn beneath. When series are rebased to 100, both start from one shared inception dot: a 5.5px cream circle with a 1.4px ink ring and a 2px ink center, labelled "100". Small end dots (r 4 navy, r 3.5 gray) and direct labels to the right: name, then "169.8, 5.9% a year" style value. No legend.
- Bar chart: slim square-cornered navy bars (about 45% of the band) with the comparison, if any, as a warm gray bar just behind or beside; value labels above in 15px old-style figures; the same letterhead, footnotes and disclaimer apply.

Labels and annotation:
- At most one marginal note: a 0.7px #6F665A vertical leader from the event to two lines of 14px italic text ("The Fund fell 8.8% in the first quarter of 2020, against 14.1% for the benchmark"), computed from the data.

Avoid: sans-serif type, lining figures, bold colors, fills under the lines, shadows, gradients on marks, rounded corners and a boxed legend.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the figures are old-style, the footnote markers match their footnotes, every stated return and annualized rate is arithmetically right, and the end labels don't touch each other or the page edge.
