Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Whiteprint" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an engineering drawing plotted from CAD onto a clean white sheet. Precise, quiet and technical: hairline frames, a fine square grid, dimension lines with arrowheads and a title block in the corner, as if the chart were a released drawing.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Sheet: #FFFFFF for the whole canvas.
- Ink: #111111 for the data line, node markers, axes, tick labels, the title and title block values.
- Dimension blue: #2B5C8A for dimension lines, arrowheads, extension lines, balloons and dimension text.
- Frame hairline: #8A9BB0 for the sheet frame, zone dividers and title block rules. Zone letters, subtitle and axis titles in #5B6B7D.
- Grid: #E1E7EE for minor grid lines, #C9D3DE for every second (major) line.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- IBM Plex Mono for every piece of text. Title 600 21px in #111111, sentence case, stating the finding. Subtitle 11.5px uppercase, 0.6px letter-spacing, #5B6B7D, naming measure, units and test condition.
- Tick labels 10.5px #111111. Axis titles 10.5px uppercase with 1px letter-spacing in #5B6B7D (the y title rotated -90 degrees).
- Dimension text 500 11.5px #2B5C8A. Notes 10.5px uppercase. Title block captions 7.5px uppercase with 0.8px letter-spacing in #5B6B7D; values 600 12px; drawing title 600 15px.

Layout:
- A double sheet frame: outer 0.8px rectangle inset 16px, inner 1.4px rectangle inset 30px, both #8A9BB0. The 14px margin between them carries zone markers: numbers 1 to 8 along top and bottom, letters A to D down both sides (8.5px, #5B6B7D) with short 0.6px dividers between zones.
- Title at top left (x 56), subtitle 24px below it.
- Plot area about 600 x 300 px starting at x 104, y 120. To its right, a NOTES column: "NOTES" 600 11.5px with a 40px underline, then numbered notes (1., 2., ...) at 18px line spacing restating the key measured values.
- A ruled title block in the bottom right corner (330 x 102 px, 1.4px #8A9BB0 border): a TITLE row across the full width, then two rows split into three cells (DWG NO. / SCALE / REV, then DRAWN / UNITS / SHEET) with 0.8px rules. Each cell has a tiny caption above its value.
- "Source: illustrative data" in 10.5px #5B6B7D at the bottom left inside the frame.

Axes and grid:
- A square grid of 30 px cells (the 10 mm grid) covering only the plot area; every second line heavier (#C9D3DE, 0.8px) and the rest #E1E7EE at 0.6px.
- Left and bottom axes as one 1px #111111 path, overshooting the grid by 6px. Outward ticks 5px long at labeled values only.

Marks:
- Line chart: a thin 1.4px #111111 polyline with straight segments and round joins, no smoothing and no area fill. Every data point gets a small square node: 5.5 x 5.5 px, #FFFFFF fill, 1.1px #111111 stroke. For several series, keep all in #111111 and tell them apart with dash patterns (solid, 6 3, 2 3) and node shapes (square, circle, triangle), each labeled at its end.
- Bar chart: bars drawn as outlined rectangles with a 1.2px #111111 stroke and #FFFFFF fill (or 45 degree hatching at 6px spacing in #111111 for emphasis), square corners, no gaps filled in. Values sit on dimension lines rather than on top of the bars.

Labels and annotation:
- Dimension lines are the signature. Draw them in 0.8px #2B5C8A with filled arrowheads (12 x 5 px) at both ends, plus 0.7px extension lines from the measured feature that overshoot the dimension line by 6px. Break the dimension line under its text with a #FFFFFF rectangle; vertical dimensions carry rotated text.
- Dimension key values: a horizontal dimension for a span along x (for example elongation at fracture), vertical dimensions from the baseline to a level (peak, threshold). Never let two dimension lines cross.
- Balloons: circles r 8 with 0.8px #2B5C8A stroke and #FFFFFF fill holding a 600 10px number, on a straight 0.7px leader that touches the point; the numbers match the NOTES list.

Avoid: color fills, gradients, shadows, rounded corners, smoothing, legends in boxes, any font other than the monospace, and crossing dimension lines.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the grid cells are square, every dimension value matches the data it measures, no dimension line crosses another or the curve, notes fit inside the inner frame, and the title block is aligned to the inner frame's bottom right corner.
