Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Tempo Map" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a choreographer's rehearsal notebook, drawn cleanly. White ruled paper, a pencil-graphite line, sections of the piece named in italic like handwritten headings, and one muted red for moments that matter.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF, with faint notebook rules in #DCE6F0 (0.8px at 55% opacity, every 26px across the whole canvas) and one vertical margin line in #E7AFAF (1px) at x 58.
- Data line, title, section names and value labels: #34373D (graphite).
- Secondary text, tick labels and minor ticks: #8C8F96. Gridlines: #C9D3DE.
- Alternate section shading: #F2F0EB.
- Accent for change markers, their labels and the eyebrow: #B4534A.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Gowun Batang 700, 29px, graphite for the title, stated as the finding; Gowun Batang 400, 12px for a small page note at bottom right ("rehearsal notes, p. 14").
- Figtree for everything else: eyebrow 11px 600 uppercase with 2.4px letter-spacing in #B4534A; subtitle 15px #8C8F96 with measure and unit; section names 14px 500 italic graphite; tick labels 12 to 12.5px 500 #8C8F96; value labels 12.5px 600 to 700; key 12.5px; source 11.5px italic.

Layout:
- Plot from x 92 to 896 and y 196 to 458. Eyebrow at y 70, title at y 110, subtitle at y 138, all left-aligned at x 92.
- Section band: a row of named segments along the top of the plot (names centered 9px above the plot top), every second segment shaded #F2F0EB from 26px above the plot top down to the baseline, with 0.8px dotted (2 on, 3 off) #8C8F96 dividers between segments.
- A one-line key under the time axis (line swatch, change circle, tick swatch with explanation), then "Source: illustrative data" at bottom left.

Axes and grid:
- Four horizontal gridlines at round values, 0.8px #C9D3DE; y labels right-aligned 10px left of the plot with a small italic unit label ("bpm") above them. No y-axis line.
- A 1.2px graphite baseline. Under it, a rhythm ruler: one tiny tick per count (0.8px #8C8F96, 5px long starting 3px below the baseline) with every fourth tick taller (10px, 1.1px graphite). Space the ticks by the data (integrate the rate), so they crowd where the measure is high.
- Time labels (m:ss) centered 34px below the baseline.

Marks:
- Line chart: a smooth monotone curve (no overshoot), 2.2px graphite with round caps and joins, over a 5px graphite under-stroke at 12% opacity like soft pencil. Where the value changes regime, a hollow circle r 5.5, fill #FFFFFF, 1.8px #B4534A stroke, labeled in 12.5px 700 #B4534A (above-left for rises, below-right for drops). Small r 3 graphite dots with values at the start and end.
- Bar chart: slender square-cornered graphite columns (about 45% of the band) with a 12% graphite halo, value labels in 12.5px 600 above; any bar that marks a regime change gets a hollow #B4534A circle on its top and a red label. Keep the section shading, the dotted dividers and the rhythm ruler under the baseline.

Avoid: gradients, drop shadows, bright colors, heavy frames, a boxed legend, and more than one accent color.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the notebook rules stay faint behind everything, that change labels never sit on the line, that section names stay centered in their segments, and that the ticks under the baseline read as a rhythm rather than a solid bar.
