Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Liner Notes" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the back cover of a 1960s jazz LP. An off-white board, a narrow block of serif liner notes set beside the chart, one heavy black line, and the small print of a record jacket in the corner. Literate, quiet and archival.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Board: #F4F1EA (off-white) for the whole canvas.
- Ink: #161412 for the title, the data line, markers, axis baseline, year labels and notes text.
- Accent: #B8412C (label red), only for the artist or series name in the eyebrow and a small 33 rpm roundel in the footer.
- Secondary text: #6B645A. Hairline rules and gridlines: #CFC7B8.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Libre Baskerville: title 700, 27px, sentence case stating the finding; liner notes 400, 10.5px on a 17.5px line; annotation titles 400 italic, 14px; a small italic sign-off ("The editors") in #6B645A.
- Jost: eyebrow 600 13px uppercase with 4.5px letter-spacing (name in red, then a 400 continuation in #6B645A about 28px after it); subtitle 15px #6B645A; axis labels 12px (y) and 13px 500 with 1px letter-spacing (x); annotation details 11px with 0.6px letter-spacing; source and footnote 11.5px; jacket text 10.5px 600 and 9.5px uppercase with 1.4 to 2px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- 48px side margins. Eyebrow at y 58, title at y 100, subtitle at y 128, then a double rule across the full width (1.5px and 0.6px, 4px apart, in #161412).
- Left: a "NOTES" label (Jost 10px 600, 3px letter-spacing) over two narrow columns of liner notes, each about 130px wide with 18px between them, ragged right. The notes describe the series in prose and should quote one true total from the data.
- A 1px #CFC7B8 vertical gutter rule at x 344, then the chart fills x 392 to 900.
- Footer: a 1px #CFC7B8 rule, then source and a one-line marker key at left, and at right a 160 x 36 px outlined box (1px ink) with a catalog number ("CRN 4417 · STEREO") over a matrix code ("MATRIX CR-4417-A 1S"), preceded by a 12px-radius red outlined roundel reading "33".

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 0.8px #CFC7B8, at round values. Y labels right-aligned 16px left of the plot.
- A 1.2px ink baseline with 6px downward ticks at each labeled x value. No y-axis line.

Marks:
- Line chart: one 4px #161412 line with straight segments and square caps and miter joins. Every point gets a 7px solid ink square. Landmark points get an 11px open square (board fill, 2.5px ink stroke). Landmarks are called out on 0.8px ink leaders: an italic serif title with a Jost detail line underneath ("1961 · 36 sessions"). Place labels above the line, or below it where the area under the line is empty, and never over the y labels.
- Bar chart: slim square-cornered solid #161412 bars about 45% of the band, landmark bars drawn as open bars (board fill, 2.5px ink outline), each landmark labeled with the same italic title on a leader; value labels in Jost 12px above bars.

Avoid: color fills, gradients, shadows, rounded corners, more than one accent color, a legend box, and letting the notes columns touch.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the two notes columns and the chart gutter do not collide, the leaders point at the right markers, the title and notes are arithmetically true, and the jacket box sits flush with the right margin.
