Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Solve Times" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the stats box in a newspaper's puzzle corner. Stark black on white, crisp square geometry, crossword grid details, and one restrained blue for the reader's own numbers.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF. Primary ink, frame, rules and the main series: #111111.
- Second series (the reader's own or comparison values): #2B5BAA.
- Gridlines: #D6D6D6. Secondary text: #5C5C5C.
- Only these colors; no fills or tints.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Libre Franklin throughout.
- Kicker 12px 700 uppercase with 2.6px letter-spacing, e.g. "THE DAILY LATTICE · SOLVER STATS".
- Title 32px 800, -0.6px letter-spacing, #111111, stating the finding.
- Subtitle 15px 400 #5C5C5C naming measure, unit and period.
- Axis labels 13px 500 #5C5C5C; value labels 14px 800 ink for the main series and 13px 600 blue for the second; legend 13px 600; footer 12px.

Layout:
- A double frame: a 1px #111111 hairline rectangle 20px in from the canvas edge, and a 2.5px #111111 rectangle 26px in.
- Kicker at y 64, title at y 108, subtitle at y 136, then a full-width 1px ink rule at y 156 (56px side margins).
- A tiny 5 x 5 crossword grid (11px cells, 0.8px ink strokes, 7 black cells in rotational symmetry) at the top right, aligned with the kicker.
- Legend right-aligned above the plot. Footer rule at y 542 with "Source: ..." left (12px #5C5C5C) and a one-line takeaway right (12px 600 ink).

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines 1px #D6D6D6 every 5 units; the zero baseline 1.5px #111111. Y labels right-aligned left of the plot; the top one carries the unit ("30 min").
- Faint vertical guides at each category, 1px #D6D6D6 dashed 2 on 3 off.
- Category labels sit inside crossword cells: 48 x 36 px rectangles with a 1.5px ink border, 16px below the baseline, a tiny clue number (1, 2, 3...) at the top left in 8.5px 600, and the label (MON, TUE...) centered in 12px 800 with 0.6px letter-spacing. The single most important category (the hardest day, the peak) is a black cell with white text.

Marks:
- Line chart: the main series is a 4.5px #111111 straight-segment line with miter joins and filled 12 x 12 px black square markers; the second series is a 1.75px #2B5BAA line with hollow 10 x 10 px squares (white fill, 1.75px blue stroke). Main values labeled 14px above each marker; second-series values labeled below each marker, flipped above where the second series is the higher one, with the difference in parentheses ("26.1 (+1.8)").
- Bar chart: square-cornered solid #111111 bars at about 55% of the band; a comparison series as narrower hollow bars with a 1.75px #2B5BAA outline, or as blue hollow-square markers at each bar's comparison value. Values above bars in 14px 800. Category labels in the same crossword cells.
- Legend: a short line sample with its square marker (filled black, hollow blue) and a 13px 600 label in the series color.

Avoid: rounded corners, circles as markers, gradients, shadows, color fills behind the plot, more than one accent color, and italic type.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the double frame is fully visible, every category sits in its own crossword cell with text clear of the cell border, value labels never touch a line or marker, and exactly one cell is black.
