Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Wire Service" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a news agency flash on a terminal feed. Slate-blue screen, teletype slug line, all-caps monospace copy, and one amber mark for the period that just moved the wire.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #16202C (dark slate blue).
- Ordinary bars or lines: #8FA9C4 (pale steel blue). The current or flagged period: #F2A33A (amber), also used for the priority word in the slug line, the rule under it and the callout.
- Reference line (normal, average, target): #FFFFFF, dashed.
- Main text: #E6ECF2. Secondary text (datelines, axis labels, footer): #8397AD. Gridlines and footer rule: #243243.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- IBM Plex Mono for everything except the headline, with tabular figures; set labels in ALL CAPS with 0.6 to 1px letter-spacing. Slug line 600 14px ("WX-0412 URGENT / RAINFALL", with the priority word in #F2A33A); timestamp at right 12px #8397AD; dateline and subtitle 12.5px #8397AD; legend and x labels 12px #E6ECF2; y labels 11.5px; value labels 600 12px; footer 11px.
- Headline: IBM Plex Sans 600, 30px, -0.3px letter-spacing, #E6ECF2, sentence case, stating the finding.

Layout:
- 48px margins. The slug line at top left and a timestamp/priority line at top right, then a 1.5px #F2A33A rule across the full width.
- Headline about 45px below the rule, then a mono dateline naming place, date, measure, unit and period, then a legend row with 12px square swatches and a short dashed sample for the reference line.
- Plot from about y 206 to 500. A 1px #243243 rule near the bottom with "SOURCE: ..." at left and "MORE FOLLOWS" at right, both 11px #8397AD.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 1px #243243; the zero line 1px #8397AD. Y labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot, no unit suffix (the unit is in the dateline).
- X labels as three-letter uppercase months (or short caps codes), with the year in 11px #8397AD under the first period of each year. The current period's label is 600 #F2A33A.

Marks:
- Bar chart: flat, square-cornered bars about 67% of the band, #8FA9C4, the current period #F2A33A. Values set inside the top of each bar in 600 12px mono, colored #16202C. The reference line is a stepped trace: a 1.75px #FFFFFF dashed (5 4) segment across each band at that band's reference value, joined to the next band by a short slanted connector, over a 4.5px #16202C casing at 60% opacity so it reads over the bars.
- Line chart: 2.5px #8FA9C4 straight-segment line with square 5px markers, the current period's marker and final segment in #F2A33A, and the reference as a 1.75px dashed (5 4) #FFFFFF line.
- Callout: one short caps note in 600 12.5px #F2A33A just above the current mark ("2.2X NORMAL"), computed from the data.

Avoid: rounded corners, gradients, glows, serif type, lowercase in datelines or labels, more than one amber mark, and legends in boxes.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the slug line and amber rule read like a wire header, the dashed reference is visible over every bar, the inside-bar values fit even on the shortest bar, and the callout ratio is arithmetically right.
