Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Wall Label" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a chart hung on a gallery wall next to a mounted object label. Hushed, restrained and spacious: one quiet terracotta line, almost no chart furniture, and small, generously tracked type like museum signage.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Wall: #F4F2EE for the whole canvas. Label card: #FBFAF7 with a 0.75px #E3DFD7 border.
- Charcoal ink for titles and body text: #2B2A28. Secondary text: #6E6961.
- Data: #B5654A (muted terracotta), used for the one data line, the peak marker and a short 28px accent rule on the label card. Nothing else is colored.
- Warm gray for axis labels and the source: #8F897F. Pencil baseline, ticks and footer rule: #C6C0B6.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Libre Caslon Text italic 400 for the title (27px, charcoal, sentence case, stating the finding) and for the artwork-style title on the label card (17px; the second line with the date range in roman 400).
- Karla for everything else, set small and tracked: subtitle 10.5px 500 uppercase with 1.8px letter-spacing in #6E6961; axis labels 10.5px with 0.8 to 1.2px letter-spacing in #8F897F; label-card header 10px 700 uppercase with 2.2px letter-spacing; metadata lines 11px with 0.5px letter-spacing; the curatorial paragraph 11.5px with 0.3px letter-spacing and a 17px line height; source and wall location 9.5px 500 uppercase with 2px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Title at the top left, the uppercase subtitle 30px below it.
- The plot sits on the left (about x 104 to 612, y 168 to 486). A narrow label card on the right (236 x 318 px, starting at x 668, top aligned with the plot) carries, from top: the institution in tracked caps, the chart title as an italic artwork title with the date range beneath, four accession-style metadata lines (what was counted, the record, the department, an accession number like "Acc. no. VS.2026.0143"), a 28px terracotta rule, then a six-line curatorial paragraph that states the key numbers in prose (they must be true for the data).
- Footer: a 0.5px pencil rule at y 542, "SOURCE: ..." at the left and a wall location such as "GALLERY 4, WEST WALL" at the right.

Axes and grid:
- No gridlines and no axis lines except one pencil-thin 0.75px #C6C0B6 baseline.
- Y values as a few small labels (three round values plus 0) right-aligned 20px left of the plot, each with a 6px pencil tick; no y-axis line.
- Short 5px pencil ticks below the baseline at each period boundary, with period labels centered between ticks, 22px below the baseline.

Marks:
- Line chart: one 1.6px terracotta line with straight segments, round joins and caps, no markers and no area fill. Only the peak gets a marker: a hollow circle r 5.5 with a 1.4px terracotta stroke filled with the wall color, its value in Karla 12px 700 charcoal 30px above and the date in 10.5px #6E6961 15px above, both centered. If there are two series, draw the second in #8F897F at 1.2px and label both at their line ends.
- Bar chart: slim square-cornered bars in terracotta at about 40% of the band, no outlines, sitting on the pencil baseline, with only the tallest bar's value labeled in the same small tracked Karla. Secondary series in #8F897F.

Labels and annotation:
- Explain one notable event with a 0.6px #8F897F vertical hairline running from just above the data up to a two-line note in Karla 10.5px #6E6961.

Avoid: gridlines, legends in boxes, bold colors, dots on every point, drop shadows, gradients, and any typography larger or louder than the title.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the only colored ink is terracotta, the peak circle sits exactly on the true maximum, the numbers in the curatorial paragraph and the title match the data, and nothing in the plot touches the label card.
