Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Value Creation" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the equity bridge page of a private equity fund's investor letter. Dark forest green, brass and ivory, like a leather-bound annual meeting book: calm, expensive and focused on one multiple.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #0F1A15 (deep forest green).
- Positive steps: #C9A55C (brass), each with a 2px #E8CF94 highlight along its top edge.
- Start and end totals, connectors and headline text: #F2EBDA (ivory).
- Negative step: #B85C4F (muted red), its labels in #D98C80.
- Secondary text: #8FA096. Gridlines: #223229.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Playfair Display 600 for the title (30px ivory, stating the finding), total labels (22px) and step multiples (20px, brass or red); Playfair Display italic 15px brass for the footer multiple.
- Mulish for everything else: eyebrow 11px 700 uppercase brass with 2.6px letter-spacing; subtitle 14px gray; axis labels 12px; dollar step labels 12px gray; category labels 13px 600 (800 ivory for the totals), in two lines; source 11.5px.

Layout:
- A thin brass rule at 55% opacity across the top, then eyebrow, title and subtitle at a 48px left margin.
- The bridge fills the width with 72px bars in equal slots; two-line category labels under the baseline.
- Footer rule with the source at the left and the overall multiple in italic brass at the right.

Axes and grid:
- Four horizontal 1px #223229 gridlines with comma-formatted labels at the left, and a 1.2px ivory baseline at 70% opacity. No vertical axis line.

Marks:
- Bar chart: a waterfall. Solid ivory start and end totals from zero, floating brass steps for gains, a muted red step for any loss, square cornered. 1px dashed (3 on, 3 off) ivory connectors at 80% opacity run from each bar's end level to the next bar. Each step is labeled above (below for losses) with its multiple of the starting value ("+0.95x") in Playfair and its dollar change beneath in Mulish; totals carry their value and a brass multiple ("3.10x").
- Line chart: an ivory 2.5px line for the running total with brass circle markers at each step, shaded brass wedges between consecutive points for gains and a red wedge for the loss, with the same multiple labels.

Avoid: bright greens, gradients on bars, shadows, rounded corners, and any real fund or company names.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the steps sum exactly from the start total to the end total, every multiple equals its dollar value divided by the start total, and connectors meet the bars at the right levels.
