Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Type Specimen" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a type foundry's specimen sheet printed in reverse. Ink black, paper white, one electric vermilion, huge display type and small monospaced metadata, with the chart treated as another showing of the face.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #0D0D0C (ink black).
- Paper white: #F2EFE8 for display type, the chart baseline and the callout caption.
- Accent: #FF4A1C (electric vermilion), only for the highlighted bar, its axis label, the callout rule and the giant callout number.
- Ordinary bars: #DEDAD1. Metadata and tick labels: #8A8780. Guide lines and gridlines: #3A3936.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Fraunces for display: a giant "Aa" at 190px weight 300 (opsz 144, -6px letter-spacing), the headline in two lines at 34px (first line weight 900, second line italic 300), an alphabet showing ("ABCDEFGHIJKLM abcdefghijklm 0123456789") at 17px weight 300 in grey, and the callout number at 112px weight 900 with -4px letter-spacing.
- Space Mono for all small text: metadata line 10px with 1.2px letter-spacing in caps, guide labels 9px with 1.5px letter-spacing, subtitle 11px, tick and bin labels 11px, caption 11px with 1.5px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- Top third is the specimen header: the "Aa" at x 40 on a baseline at y 206, with three full-width 1px #3A3936 guide lines at its cap height, x-height and baseline, each labelled at the right end ("CAP HEIGHT", "X-HEIGHT", "BASELINE"). A metadata line at the very top names the specimen and weights.
- The headline sits beside the glyphs at x 300 on the guides, with the alphabet showing between its two lines and the subtitle (measure, unit, source work) just below the baseline guide.
- Bottom two-thirds is the chart, from about y 262 to the baseline at y 526.

Axes and grid:
- Dashed 1px #3A3936 gridlines (2 on, 4 off) with small mono labels at the left; a 1.5px paper-white baseline; mono bin labels under each bar, the highlighted one bold vermilion.

Marks:
- Bar chart: flat square-cornered bars filling the bin width minus 6px gaps, all #DEDAD1 except the one highlighted bar in solid vermilion. A 1.2px vermilion rule runs from the top of that bar to the enormous callout value, set on a black knockout so gridlines stop behind it, with a small caps caption beneath in paper white.
- Line chart: a single 3px paper-white line with square caps on the black ground, the key point marked by a vermilion 6px square and the same enormous vermilion callout number; any comparison line in #8A8780 at 1.5px.

Avoid: gradients, rounded corners, shadows, more than one accent, color-coded legends, and filling the header with anything but type.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the guide lines sit on the real cap height, x-height and baseline of the "Aa", the callout number never touches a bar, and the headline claim is true for the data.
