Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Tuning Curves" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: one panel of a neuroscience journal figure. White page, open spines, precise error bars, a lowercase bold panel letter and a compact summary table beside the plot. Restrained, quantitative and exact.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF. Primary ink, axes and ticks: #1A1A1A. Secondary text: #5C5C5C. Hairline rules: #E4E4E4; table rule #BDBDBD.
- Series, in order: #1A1A1A (black), #1F5BB5 (deep blue), #149682 (teal), #D9701A (orange). No other data colors.

Typography (Google Fonts): Roboto Flex for everything.
- Panel letter: lowercase "a", 800, 34px, #1A1A1A, top-left corner at x 40.
- Title: 650, 27px, -0.3px letter-spacing, stating the finding, left-aligned next to the panel letter (x 84).
- Subtitle: 400, 14.5px, #5C5C5C: measure, unit, what the error bars show and n.
- Tick labels 14px #1A1A1A; axis titles 500, 15px; series labels 700, 14px in the series color.
- Table header: 700, 11.5px uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing in #5C5C5C; column heads 600, 12.5px; values 400, 14px right-aligned.

Layout:
- Heading block at the top with a full-width 1px #E4E4E4 rule under it (y 116).
- Plot on the left (about x 132 to 700), a 1px #E4E4E4 vertical divider, then a 170px-wide summary table on the right listing each series with a small colored down-triangle, its name and 2 or 3 key numbers (for tuning data: preferred value, peak, selectivity index), with a one-line formula note under it.
- Source line at the bottom-left, 12px #5C5C5C.

Axes and grid:
- No gridlines and no plot frame. Only left and bottom spines, 1.2px #1A1A1A, offset 14px away from the data area so they do not touch the first point or the zero line.
- Outward ticks 6px long at every data position on x (label every other one) and at round values on y.
- Rotated y-axis title; x-axis title centered under the tick labels.

Marks:
- Line chart: each series is a smooth 2px line (a fitted curve or monotone interpolation) with open circle markers at the data points (r 4, white fill, 1.6px stroke in the series color) and error bars at every point (1.1px, 7px caps, series color). Draw all error bars first, then lines, then markers. Mark each series' peak x position with a filled down-pointing triangle (13 x 11 px) in the series color sitting on the x spine. Label each series directly 18px above its peak error bar.
- Bar chart: slim square-cornered bars in the same four colors, grouped by category, with the same error bars and caps and open circles for the mean; spines and outward ticks as above; direct labels above each group's first bar instead of a legend.

Avoid: gridlines, boxed plot frames, legends when direct labels fit, gradients, shadows, rounded corners, bright saturated colors beyond the four series hues, and decorative icons.

When you're done, render the chart and check that spines are offset from the data, every error bar has caps and sits under its marker, the peak triangles line up exactly with the peak data positions, and the table numbers match the plotted data.
