Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Trial Balance" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a bookkeeper's green columnar pad. Ruled paper, a red double margin line, account numbers down the left, typewritten figures in money columns and a proper totals row. Orderly, tactile and exact.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #F3F8F1 (pale green-tinted ledger paper) for the whole canvas.
- Debit marks, debit figures, the eyebrow and the in-balance tick: #166534 (dark ledger green).
- Credit marks and credit figures: #B91C1C (ledger red).
- Horizontal ledger rules: #CFE3CB. Column rules: #9CC49A. The margin double rule: #D9534F.
- Primary text: #23302A. Secondary text (account numbers, headings, source): #5E7166.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Libre Caslon Text for the title (700, 27px, #23302A, stating the finding), the subtitle (italic 400, 15px, #5E7166, measure, unit and date) and the category or account names (400, 15px).
- Courier Prime for every figure and small label: eyebrow 700 12px uppercase with 2px letter-spacing in #166534; column headings 700 12px uppercase with 1.5px letter-spacing; account numbers 400 15px #5E7166; money figures 700 15px in the series color with two decimals ("48,215.00"); totals 700 16px; source 12px.

Layout:
- Ledger rules run the full canvas width every 32px (starting at y 24), 1px #CFE3CB, and the data rows sit exactly between two rules.
- A vertical red double rule at the left margin: two 1.2px #D9534F lines at x 76 and x 80, full height.
- Eyebrow at y 50 from x 96 ("COMPANY · GENERAL LEDGER"), a small page mark right-aligned at x 908, title at y 94, subtitle at y 122.
- Columnar pad below: an account number column (x 96), a name column (x 156), then two money columns, Debit (x 356 to 624) and Credit (x 640 to 908). 0.8px #9CC49A vertical column rules at the column edges from the heading row down; a double vertical rule (3px apart) between the Debit and Credit columns.
- Column headings in the row above the data, with a 9px square swatch of the series color before DEBIT and CREDIT. A 1.4px #166534 rule under the headings.
- "Source: illustrative data" at the bottom left in Courier Prime; optional check figure ("Difference: 0.00") bottom right.

Axes and grid:
- No numeric axis. Each bar is labelled with its exact figure, right-aligned at the right edge of its money column.
- The ledger rules are the only horizontal grid.

Marks:
- Bar chart: horizontal square-cornered bars, 14px tall, centered in each 32px row, starting at the left edge of their money column (debits in the Debit column, credits in the Credit column) with length proportional to the value (about 176px for the largest scale value). Solid #166534 or #B91C1C, no outline. Totals row: a 1.2px #23302A single rule above each column total and a double rule (two 1.2px lines 4px apart) below it, the label "Totals" in Libre Caslon 700 16px, and a hand-drawn check tick (2.2px stroke, round caps) with "IN BALANCE" when the columns agree.
- Line chart: draw each series as a 2px square-joined line in #166534 or #B91C1C with 3px square markers, over the same ruled paper, category labels in Courier Prime in the left columns or along the bottom rule, and end figures printed in Courier Prime 700 in the series color. Put a single rule and double rule under the final period's value like a total.

Avoid: rounded corners, gradients, shadows, sans-serif fonts, a legend box, more than two data colors, and any figure without two decimals.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every data row sits exactly between two ledger rules, figures are right-aligned in their column, the totals are arithmetically correct and underlined with a double rule, and nothing crosses the red margin.
