Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Trawl Survey" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a marine lab's annual survey bulletin. Calm, quiet and comparative: a sea-foam page, a grid of small panels, one thin teal line per species against the pale band of what is normal.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #EEF5F2 (sea foam).
- Every data line: #22575A (dark teal). The long-term normal range band: #C4DED6.
- Exception: #B4553A (rust) for the end dot and status word of any series whose latest value is below its range.
- Title and names #15302F, secondary text #557170, gridlines #D6E5DF, panel baselines and ticks #8FAAA4.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Instrument Sans throughout. Title 700, 28px, -0.3px letter-spacing, #15302F, stating the finding. Subtitle 14.5px #557170 with measure, unit, period and how the band is defined.
- Panel name 700 17px at the panel's top left. Latest value at the panel's top right: a 12px 500 status word ("within range", "above range", "below range"), the value in 17px 700 teal, then the unit in 12px 500.
- Tick labels 11 to 12px #557170, key 12.5px, source 11.5px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Title at y 60, subtitle at 88. A 3 x 2 grid of panels from x 56 to 904 with 40px gutters; each panel has a 34px header then a 138px plot. Rows start at y 124 and 326.
- A key row at y 542 (range swatch, line sample, rust dot) with "Each panel has its own y scale" right-aligned, then the source line.

Axes and grid:
- Each panel gets its own y scale starting at zero, marked only by 1px #D6E5DF gridlines at the top and half values, with 11px labels right-aligned in a 30px gutter at the panel's right edge (plus "0" at the baseline).
- A 1px #8FAAA4 baseline in every panel. X-axis ticks and year labels (first, middle, last) only on the bottom row.

Marks:
- Line chart: 1.6px teal straight-segment line with round joins over the long-term range band (a flat rectangle from the reference-period 10th to 90th percentile). Finish with a 3.4px dot with a 1.5px page-colored ring, rust if below range.
- Bar chart: slim teal bars (about 55% of the band, square corners) in each panel over the same range band, the latest bar rust if below range; value labels only on the latest bar.

Avoid: a shared legend of species colors (all series are the same teal), panel borders or backgrounds, dense gridlines, repeating the x axis on every row, and bright colors.

When you're done, render the chart and check that tick labels never touch line ends, every panel's status word matches its latest value versus its band, and the title is true for the data.
