Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Transit Light Curve" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a figure from an astronomy journal paper. Precise, monochrome and quietly authoritative: boxed panels with inward ticks, raw measurements in gray, a fitted model in black, and a narrow residual panel underneath proving the fit.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF.
- Ink for frames, ticks, model lines, labels and panel letters: #111111.
- Raw measurements (many small points): #A3A3A3.
- Binned or summary points (the one accent): #2B4C8C, with a 0.9px white outline.
- Highlighted interval shading (for example the transit window between first and fourth contact): #F1F1F1, spanning both panels.
- Secondary text (subtitle, notes, source): #5C5C5C.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- STIX Two Text for every piece of text.
- Title: 600, 27px, #111111, sentence case, states the finding.
- Subtitle: italic 400, 15.5px, #5C5C5C, naming measure, cadence and units.
- Tick labels 14px 400; axis titles 15px (13px for the narrow residual panel); use a true minus sign and a leading plus on positive offsets.
- Panel letters "(a)", "(b)": 700, 15px, inside the top-left corner of each panel on a small white patch.
- Annotations 13 to 15px; Greek symbols and variable names in italic (for example "δ = 1.23%" and "T" with a 10px subscript).
- Source line: italic 13px #5C5C5C at the bottom left.

Layout:
- Title at y 50 and subtitle at y 78, both starting at x 56.
- A main panel from x 104 to 900 and y 128 to 402, and a residual panel flush beneath it (y 402 to 494), sharing one x axis. No gap between the panels: the bottom edge of the top frame is the top edge of the lower frame.
- x tick labels 22px under the lower panel, the x axis title 46px under it; rotated y axis titles centered on each panel at x 40.

Axes and grid:
- Each panel is a closed 1px #111111 frame. No gridlines.
- Ticks point inward on all four sides: majors 7px, minors 3.5px, 0.9px stroke. On the time axis, majors every unit and minors every quarter unit, repeated on the shared edge between panels.
- The residual panel has a symmetric range around zero with a 0.9px solid zero line and only three labeled ticks (negative, 0, positive).
- Label the y axis with enough decimals to be exact (for example 0.985 to 1.005).

Marks:
- Line chart: raw observations as r 1.9 #A3A3A3 dots with no line; the fitted model as a 1.4px #111111 line sampled finely enough to look smooth; binned means as r 3.3 #2B4C8C dots drawn above the model. The residual panel shows observed minus model as r 1.7 #A3A3A3 dots. Clip all marks to their frames.
- Bar chart: slim hollow bars with a 1px #111111 outline and #F1F1F1 fill inside the same boxed frame with inward ticks, error bars as 1px black whiskers with 6px caps, and a narrow lower panel of differences from a model or reference shown as #A3A3A3 dots around a zero line.

Labels and annotation:
- Mark events with short 1.2px black vertical ticks that hang from above the frame 12px into it, labeled in italic above the frame (T1, T2, T3, T4 with subscripts).
- Show the key measurement with a thin double-headed arrow (0.9px, small open arrowheads) between the reference level and the minimum, with a 2-2 dashed stub at the reference level and the value in 15px beside it plus a 13px #5C5C5C note underneath.
- A small legend in the empty region of the top panel: white box with a 0.6px black border listing raw points, binned points and the model.
- Print a fit statistic (for example "rms = 1.21 ppt") in the top-right corner of the residual panel.

Avoid: color beyond the single blue accent, gridlines, outward ticks, rounded corners, drop shadows, sans-serif type, and chart-junk legends outside the frame.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the two panels share an x axis with no gap, ticks point inward on every side, the panel letters and legend sit on clear white patches, and the quoted depth and duration match the model.
