Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Trail Guide" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a folded pocket trail guide from a state forest ranger station. Khaki paper, faint topographic contours, painted trail blazes and a map scale bar standing in for the axis.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #E3DCC3 (khaki).
- Series: #3D5C3A (forest green) for the main category, #7A5A3A (trail brown) for the second category, #E0702A (blaze orange) for the one highlighted item. The brown bars also carry a khaki dashed centerline (2px, 7 on 5 off, 85% opacity) so the two dark colors never rely on hue alone.
- Title bar: forest green #3D5C3A with khaki text, and a 4px blaze orange rule under it.
- Ink #2B2A22 for names, values and the scale bar; muted #6B6450 for the subtitle, gridlines and notes; the highlighted value label is a darker orange #B4521A for contrast.
- Contours: #A89A74 at 40% opacity.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Barlow Condensed 700 for the title (34px uppercase, 0.6px letter-spacing, stating the finding) and 500 to 600 for the small right-aligned masthead ("REDFERN STATE FOREST", "TRAIL GUIDE NO. 4", 13 to 14px, 1.8px letter-spacing).
- Barlow for everything else: subtitle 500 15px; legend 600 13px; row names 600 15px (the highlight 700); values 600 14px ("24.6 km"); scale labels 12px; the right-hand footnote 12px italic.

Layout:
- Title bar from the top edge to y 84, text at 56px left margin.
- Subtitle at y 122, a one-line legend at y 150 with 18 x 12 swatches.
- Rows from y 176, 40px apart. Each row: a painted blaze (a slightly irregular 10 x 19 upright rectangle in the row's color) at x 57, the name at x 80, one to three difficulty dots (r 4.5 filled ink; empty ones as 1px outline rings at 45% opacity) centered around x 250, then the bar from x 288.
- A fold crease down the exact middle: a 16px band of 2.5% black, a 1px #B9AE8C line and a 1px #F3EEDC highlight beside it.
- Topographic contours sit behind everything below the title bar: wobbly concentric closed rings around one or two knolls, 1px, with every fifth ring 1.8px as an index contour.

Axes and grid:
- No y axis. Faint vertical dotted gridlines (0.8px, 2 on 4 off, 60% opacity) at round values.
- The x axis is a map scale bar under the last row: a 6px bar of alternating ink and khaki segments with a 1px ink outline, km labels above it, and a second row of ticks and labels below it in miles (1 mi = 1.609344 km), the last label of each row carrying the unit.

Marks:
- Bar chart: square-cornered horizontal bars 20px tall, sorted descending, colored by category, with the value 8px past the bar end.
- Line chart: a 3px forest line with a 1px khaki halo, the comparison series in trail brown dashed (7 on 5), and the highlight point as a blaze orange painted rectangle marker with its value in #B4521A; the scale bar still forms the x axis when x is a distance, otherwise use plain Barlow tick labels.

Avoid: rounded bars, glossy effects, heavy gridlines, contours dark enough to compete with the data, and colored text beyond the single highlight.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the contours stay faint, the dashed centerline makes the brown category distinct, the km and mile ticks are placed at true distances, and the fold crease does not hide any label.
