Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Trace Section" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an architect's section drawing on a sheet of yellow trace, taped over white bond paper on the drafting table. Black ink, hatched poche, hand lettering, a graphic scale bar and a proper sheet title block. Precise but plainly drawn by hand.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Bond paper underneath: #FFFFFF with a faint printed 24px grid in #9DB7C9, 0.5px lines at 45% opacity, visible only at the edges.
- Trace sheet: #F4E7A1 at 86% opacity, covering x 30 to 932, y 20 to 582, rotated -0.7 degrees, with a 0.8px #D9C97E edge and a soft drop shadow (dy 1.5, blur 2, #7A6F4C at 25%).
- Masking tape: #E9DFC4 at 85%, 78 x 22 px strips across the top-left and bottom-right corners, rotated -38 degrees.
- Ink for every mark and most text: #1B1B1B. Secondary lettering: #4A463C and #3A372F. Pencil construction lines and small field captions: #8C8574.
- Redline accent: #C2412D, only for the one construction annotation (a dimension line) and the revision letter.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Architects Daughter (400) for all text, sentence case unless noted.
- Title 30px #1B1B1B stating the finding; subtitle 16px #4A463C with measure and place; underline the header with a 1.2px ink rule.
- Axis numbers 14px, month labels 13px uppercase (JAN, FEB...), callouts 14px, notes 13.5px, source 13px #5A5548.
- Title block: project name 15px uppercase with 0.5px letter-spacing, drawing name 13px, field captions (SHEET, REV) 9.5px #8C8574 with 1px letter-spacing, field values 15px.

Layout:
- Header at x 68: title baseline 78, subtitle 108, rule at 122 from x 68 to 706.
- Plot from x 150 to 690, ground line at y 456, top of scale (18 units) at y 168.
- Right column from x 736: a NOTES heading (15px, underlined 46px) with three numbered notes at 20px leading, then a key (a 28px sample of each line style with a label).
- Title block at lower right: x 726, y 390, 186 x 164, 1.6px ink border, 0.9px internal rules separating project name, drawing name, a SHEET and REV pair, and a small horizontal graphic scale.
- Source line at lower left (x 68, y 540).

Axes and grid:
- The value axis is a vertical graphic scale bar 52px left of the plot: an 8px wide column of blocks, one per 2 units, alternately filled #1B1B1B and empty with a 1px ink outline. Numbers every 4 units to its left, the unit (HRS) above it.
- Pencil construction lines at the labeled values: 0.7px #8C8574, dash pattern 10 4 2 4 (center-line style), 70% opacity, running 8px past the plot on each side.
- Ground line: 3px ink from 30px before to 30px after the plot, with a 14px band of earth poche under it (diagonal hatch at -45 degrees, 1px and 0.5px lines on a 10px pitch) closed by a 0.8px line.
- Month ticks: 6px ink ticks rising from the ground line at each period boundary, labels centered in each period 38px below the ground.
- Horizontal graphic scale in the title block: four 34 x 5 px alternating blocks labeled 0, 30, 60, 90, 120 with the unit to the right.

Marks:
- Line chart: draw the series as a section profile: a 2.6px #1B1B1B line with round caps and joins, closed down to the ground by 1.4px verticals at both ends, and the area beneath filled with a 45 degree hatch (0.8px ink lines, 7px pitch) at 55% opacity. Pass every ink stroke through a hand-drawn wobble: feTurbulence fractalNoise baseFrequency 0.035, 2 octaves, feDisplacementMap scale 2.4 (filter region set to the full canvas in user space). Highlight key points with a 4px circle filled with #F4E7A1 and a 1.6px ink ring.
- Bar chart: draw each bar as a sectioned wall: 1.6px wobbly ink outline, filled with the same 45 degree hatch at 55%, standing on the 3px ground line with the earth poche below. Keep bars about 60% of their slot, square-cornered, no fills other than hatch.
- Scale figure: a simple 46px architectural human figure (circle head r 5, tapered body and legs) in #F4E7A1 with a 1.3px ink outline, standing on the ground line inside the plot, as a scale reference.

Labels and annotation:
- Callouts use a 1px ink leader with a short horizontal shoulder (about 24px) and two lines of lettering: a label (for example 21 JUNE) and the value with a few words.
- One red dimension line in #C2412D: 1px dashed (4 3) verticals up from the ground at two points, a 0.9px horizontal between them with 1.4px architectural tick slashes at each end, and a 13px uppercase label centered above it on a small #F4E7A1 knock-out so the hatch never runs through it.
- Key in the right column: a 2.6px ink sample and a 1px dashed red sample, each 28px long, with 13.5px labels.

Avoid: color fills other than the trace yellow and hatch, drop shadows on marks, perfectly straight machine lines on the ink layer, a legend box, gridlines at every step, typefaces other than Architects Daughter, and a north arrow.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the trace sheet reads as a translucent layer over white (grid visible only at the margins), the wobble is subtle (no broken strokes), no callout or dimension label crosses the profile or hatch, the title block fits all its text inside its rules, and the stated ratio in the title matches the data.
