Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Textbook Figure" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a figure on a page of a modern science textbook. Clear, friendly and instructive: a numbered section heading, a crisp figure, a pale yellow "Key Idea" box in the side column, a question bubble prompting the reader, and a boxed caption under the plot.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF. Ink for headings and body text: #1F2430. Secondary text and tick labels: #5B6270. Hairline rules and gridlines: #E3E6EC.
- Primary series, section number, figure tab, question bubble and callouts: #2451B7 (royal blue).
- Model, trend or comparison series: #D23B2E (red), always dashed.
- Key Idea box fill: #FFF3C4 (pale yellow) with a 5px left bar and divider in #E0A800 (gold); the lightbulb icon is filled #E0A800.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Merriweather for the section title (700, 24px, #1F2430), Key Idea body text (400, 13px, 22px line spacing), the caption (italic 400, 13px), the big multiplier numeral in the Key Idea box (700, 24px, blue) and the question text (400, 12px).
- Merriweather Sans for everything else: running head 11px with 2px letter-spacing (chapter number 800 in blue, chapter name 700 in #5B6270), page number 12px 700, section number 800 24px blue before the title, subtitle 13px #5B6270 with measure and unit, tick labels 12px #5B6270, axis titles 12px 700 #1F2430, legend 12px, "KEY IDEA" and "CHECK YOURSELF" 800 at 13px / 11px with 1.6 to 2px letter-spacing, source 11px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Running head at the top (chapter left, page number right) over a 1px #E3E6EC rule at y 48.
- Section number plus title at y 88, subtitle beneath at y 114, aligned with the title text.
- Plot on the left (about x 124 to 612, y 150 to 412) with the y-axis title rotated.
- Side column from x 660 to 904: the Key Idea box (y 150 to 364) with lightbulb icon, heading, a four-line explanation, a gold divider, then the headline multiplier ("29x faster at 70 °C than at 20 °C" style). Below it a blue rounded speech-bubble icon with a white "?" and a two-line "CHECK YOURSELF" question.
- Caption box under the plot (x 56 to 612, y 478 to 540): 1.2px blue outline with a solid blue 92px tab on the left reading "Figure" / "4.2" in white, then a two-line italic caption.
- Footer rule at y 562 with "Source: ..." left and an italic running title right.

Axes and grid:
- An L-shaped axis in #1F2430, 1.4px, left and bottom only; 5px outward ticks on the x-axis.
- Horizontal gridlines at each y tick, 1px #E3E6EC. No vertical gridlines.
- Axis titles name the quantity and the unit, e.g. "Temperature (°C)" and "Rate, mmol/(L·s)".

Marks:
- Line chart: primary series as a 2.5px blue line with straight segments and round markers (r 4.5, blue fill, 1.5px white ring). A model or trend as a 2px red dashed line (7 on, 5 off), drawn behind the data and clipped to the plot area. Label the last point with its value in 13px 800 blue to its right.
- Bar chart: royal blue bars about 55% of the band with square corners, value labels 12px 700 above each; a model or target as a red dashed line or dashed outline bars. Same axis, grid, caption box and side column.
- Legend in a white box with a 1px #E3E6EC border in the top-left of the plot, one row per series with a line-and-marker swatch.

Avoid: drop shadows, gradients, dark backgrounds, more than two data colors, decorative clip art beyond the lightbulb and question bubble, and a caption without the figure number.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the model line never leaves the plot area, the Key Idea numbers are arithmetically true for the data, the caption box aligns with the plot's left and right edges, and nothing in the side column collides.
