Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Terracotta" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a pottery collective's catalogue page on sun-warmed paper. Fired clay colors, unglazed texture, an umber hand-set typeface and a stamped maker's mark.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Ground: #F0E4CE (sand).
- Bars shaded by value from #E6BC94 (pale clay, smallest) to #8C3A1C (burnt sienna, largest): mix the two with t = sqrt(value / max).
- Text, baseline and median rule: #3E2718 (dark umber). Secondary text: #7A5E48. Gridlines and footer rule: #D9C6A6.
- Smoothed curve: #E6BC94 over a 50% umber casing. Maker's mark and eyebrow: #8C3A1C.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Libre Caslon Text 700 for the headline: 30px #3E2718, sentence case, stating the finding. Libre Caslon 700 26px for the monogram in the maker's mark.
- Jost for everything else: eyebrow in faux small caps (capitals 14px, lowercase set as 78% size capitals) 500 with 1.6px letter-spacing in #8C3A1C; subtitle 16px #7A5E48; value labels 14px 600 #3E2718; bin range labels 13px #3E2718; axis title and "Jars" unit 13px 500 #7A5E48; annotation 14px italic #7A5E48; caption at the bottom in faux small caps 12px 500 with 1.2px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Eyebrow at y 56, headline at y 100, subtitle at y 130.
- Maker's mark roundel at the top right (center about 842, 94, rotated -8 degrees, 85% opacity): a 44px radius 2.4px ring, a 22px radius 1.2px inner ring, the collective's name and a date running around a 33px radius circle in Jost 600 10.5px capitals spread evenly over the full circumference, and a serif monogram in the center. Roughen it with a speckle mask so it looks stamped (fractal noise at frequency 1.4 punched out of the ink).
- Plot about x 104 to 900, y 186 to 484. A caption line at the bottom with a 1px rule above it.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 1px #D9C6A6, at three round values; y labels 14px #7A5E48 right-aligned 12px left of the plot, with the unit word above them.
- Baseline: a 3px #3E2718 rule, thicker than everything else. Short 1px umber ticks (6px) at every bin edge, bin ranges printed centered under each bin ("20–25") 26px below, and the axis title 50px below.

Marks:
- Bar chart (histogram): adjoining bars with only a 1.2px sand seam between them, 7px rounded top corners, square at the baseline, shaded pale-to-burnt by value. Add an unglazed grain: fractal noise (baseFrequency 0.75 x 0.35, 2 octaves) turned into light cream specks, composited inside the bars at about 45% strength. Count labels 9px above each bar, with a 4px sand halo (paint-order stroke) so they stay readable where the curve crosses. A smoothed distribution curve (Gaussian kernel, about 0.7 bin widths) drawn as a 2.4px pale clay line over a 4.6px umber casing at 50%. A 1.4px umber median rule from above the tallest bar to the baseline with "Median 24.5 L" in Jost 600 14px to its right. One short italic annotation with a curved 1px leader for a secondary feature.
- Line chart: a 3px #8C3A1C line with small 4px pale clay dots ringed in sienna, a pale-clay-to-sand area fill under it at 35% opacity carrying the same grain, the same thick umber baseline, and a single umber reference rule for the median or average.

Avoid: glossy highlights, gaps between histogram bars, cool colors, pure black, heavy grain that muddies the bars, and chart junk around the stamp.

When you're done, render the chart and check that bars touch, the grain is subtle, the median and any shares in the title are computed from the data, the stamp text wraps the circle without overlapping itself, and no count label is hidden by the curve.
