Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Tell-Tale Gauge" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a structural engineer's heritage monitoring sheet. Pale limestone paper, one terracotta measurement line, a gray tolerance field, a dashed intervention marker and terse survey notes with circled reference codes. Precise, calm and evidential.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #EDE8DF (pale limestone) for the whole canvas.
- Primary data mark: #B5553A (terracotta).
- Tolerance field: #DAD4C9 at 70% opacity. Reference ink for the alert line, tolerance label and corner motif: #4F5B63 (slate).
- Text ink: #2B2926. Secondary text: #6F6A61. Gridlines and rules: #D3CCC0.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Crimson Pro 600, 34px, #2B2926 for the title only, sentence case, stating the finding.
- Barlow for every measurement and label: eyebrow 11.5px 600 uppercase with 2px letter-spacing in #6F6A61 ("SITE / STRUCTURAL MONITORING / SHEET 4 OF 9"); subtitle 16px 400 #6F6A61 naming the gauge, measure, unit and period; axis labels 13px 500 (y) and 14px 500 (x); note headings 13px 600; note detail 13px 400; small uppercase labels 11 to 11.5px 600 to 700 with 1.6px letter-spacing; source 12px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow at y 50, title baseline y 92, subtitle y 122.
- Plot area x 96 to 900, y 176 to 486. Legend row at y 540, a 1px #D3CCC0 footer rule at y 556, source on the left and a drawing reference ("REF HB/SM/04 · REV C") on the right at y 578.
- Corner motif at the top right (about 104 x 60px): a crack-monitor tell-tale drawn as two overlapping plates. The back plate (#F6F3EC fill, 1px slate outline) carries a fine millimetre grid (0.4px lines, every fifth 0.8px); the front plate is translucent white (35%) with a terracotta crosshair (1.4px, 28px arms) and a 5px-radius ring at the reading point, plus two tiny slate fixing dots at opposite corners and a faint dashed crack line running behind. Under it a small label with the gauge code and latest reading ("TT3 · 0.88 mm").

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines 0.8px #D3CCC0 at each y tick; y labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot. No y-axis line.
- 1.2px #2B2926 baseline with 6px year ticks at year boundaries and year labels centered in each year.
- Tolerance: fill the band from zero to the alert level with the tolerance field color; draw the alert level as a 1px slate dashed line (6 on, 3 off) with a right-aligned uppercase label just under it ("TOLERANCE · UNDER 0.80 mm ALERT LEVEL").
- Intervention: a 1.1px #2B2926 dashed vertical line (4 on, 4 off) at the date work began, rising 20px above the plot, labeled at its top right in 11.5px 700 uppercase ("REPAIRS BEGIN · JUL 2023").

Marks:
- Line chart: a 2.2px terracotta line with straight segments and square markers (6.5px) at every reading: solid terracotta before the intervention, hollow (page-colored fill, 1.6px terracotta outline) after it, and a larger 9px square on the latest reading. Label the first and latest values in Barlow 15px 700 terracotta.
- Bar chart: slender square-cornered terracotta bars (about 45% of the band) rising from zero inside the same gray tolerance field; bars after the intervention drawn hollow with a 1.6px terracotta outline and page fill. Same alert line and dashed intervention marker.

Labels and annotation:
- Survey notes: a 22px circle (1px #2B2926 outline, page fill) holding a reference code in Barlow 10px 700 ("N7", "N9", "N12"), then a two-line note to its right: a 13px 600 finding and a 13px 400 detail in #6F6A61. Connect a note to its reading with a 0.9px #6F6A61 elbow leader (vertical then horizontal). Place notes in empty space and never over the line.
- A small legend row: filled square "Before repair", hollow square "After repair", tolerance swatch "Tolerance field".

Avoid: smoothing the line, gradients, shadows, rounded bar corners, more than one data color, and notes that sit on top of data or the intervention label.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the corner gauge does not touch the title, the notes' numbers are arithmetically true for the data, every leader lands on the reading it describes, and the before/after marker change sits exactly at the intervention date.
