Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Studbook Census" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a zoo breeding-program studbook or registry report. Quiet, archival and precise: ecru paper, a bookish serif headline, one deep green population line and a small ledger of in and out flows underneath.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F6F2E8 (pale ecru) for the whole canvas.
- Main series: #2E5E4E (deep green), also used for the eyebrow text.
- Inflows (births, additions): #2A8C8C (teal). Outflows (deaths, removals): #B5532F (rust).
- Target or threshold line and its label: #9C7B35 (ochre).
- Ink #24231F for title, axis and annotations; secondary text #6F6A5E; gridlines and footer rule #DDD5C3.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Literata 600 for the title (31px, #24231F, sentence case stating the finding), end-value labels (16 to 17px, green) and an italic 400 folio at bottom right (13px, "Regional studbook, edition 26").
- Red Hat Text for everything else: eyebrow 11.5px 700 uppercase with 2.2px letter-spacing, words separated by middle dots; subtitle 15px 400 #6F6A5E stating measure, unit and period; tick labels 12.5 to 13px; annotation headings 12.5px 700; annotation detail 11.5px 400; source 12px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow at y 50, title at y 92, subtitle at y 120, then a double rule across the full width (1.2px and 0.5px #24231F lines 3.5px apart) like a registry masthead.
- Plot area from x 96 to 884, y 176 to 408. A "births and deaths" ledger strip sits under the year labels, centered on y 466, then a footer rule at y 530 with the source at left and the italic folio at right.

Axes and grid:
- Left y labels only, right-aligned 12px from the plot, with a small "Animals" unit label above them. Horizontal gridlines 0.8px #DDD5C3 every 20 units, no vertical gridlines.
- A 1px #24231F baseline. Tick marks down from the baseline: 5px at labelled years (every 5), 3px muted for the rest. Year labels 13px 500 centered 22px below.

Marks:
- Line chart: a 2.8px #2E5E4E line with straight segments and round joins, over a very light green area fill (#2E5E4E at 7% opacity). Dots (r 4.5, 2px page-colored ring) only on the first point, the last point and the point that crosses the target. Label the first and last values directly in Literata; label the crossing point "103 in 2018" in 12.5px 700 green.
- Target: a 1.4px dashed #9C7B35 line (6 on, 4 off) across the plot, labelled above at its left end in 12.5px 700 ochre and explained below in 11.5px italic ochre.
- Ledger strip: for each period a 6px-wide teal bar rising from a #DDD5C3 center line (births) and a rust bar hanging below it (deaths), 2.6px per animal. "Births" and "Deaths" labels right-aligned left of the strip in their colors, with the period totals in the same colors at the right end.
- Bar chart: slender deep green bars (about 40% of the band) on the same ecru page, square-cornered, with the same dashed ochre target line, value labels in Literata above the first, last and target-crossing bars, and the same teal/rust ledger strip underneath if there are inflows and outflows.

Labels and annotation:
- One event note: a thin 0.8px #24231F vertical leader from just below the line down to the note, with a 12.5px 700 heading ("2014: 3 new founders imported") and one 11.5px muted line of detail.

Avoid: legends boxes, heavy gridlines, bright or saturated colors, drop shadows, rounded bars, more than one event note.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the population arithmetic matches the ledger (previous + births - deaths + imports), the title's crossing year is the first year at or above the target, the ledger bars line up exactly under their years and the target label does not touch the line.
