Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Strip Chart" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a length of chart-recorder paper torn off a lab instrument and laid on the bench. Pale green printed grid, sprocket perforations, two pen traces in real ink, and event notes applied with a rubber stamp. Precise, analog and calm.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Desk behind the paper: #EFEDE6.
- Recorder paper: #E9F2DF, running the full width of the canvas as a band from y 92 to y 550.
- Grid green: #8DBB8F for major grid lines, the plot frame and the track rules; #C9DEC2 for minor lines. Printed scale numbers in #4F8A5E.
- Red pen (the primary measured series): #C62F2A.
- Blue pen (the reference or second series): #2B5BA6.
- Stamp ink for event labels and leaders: #3A3D52. Title ink #23272B, subtitle #5A5F63, footer #6E726F.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Courier Prime everywhere. Title 700, 24px, #23272B, at x 40, baseline 44, stating the finding. Subtitle 400, 15px, #5A5F63, baseline 71, naming the measure and unit.
- Printed paper scales 400, 12px, #4F8A5E. Header line on the paper ("CHART 7-1300 . 0 TO 1300 C . 52 MM/H" style) 11px uppercase with 0.5px letter-spacing, right aligned.
- Stamp labels 700, 12px uppercase, stamp ink, 14px line height. Pen key 700, 12px, #23272B. Footer 12px.

Layout:
- Header on the desk color above the paper. The paper band has a 22px perforated track at the top (y 92 to 114) and bottom (y 528 to 550): rounded holes 8 x 10px, radius 2.5, every 24px, filled with the desk color and outlined 0.8px #BFCFB5, separated from the grid by a 0.8px #8DBB8F rule.
- Grid area x 84 to 916, y 134 to 508, framed with a 1.6px #8DBB8F rectangle. The same y scale is printed down both margins (left right-aligned at x 74, right right-aligned at x 954).
- Time marks printed along the bottom of the grid (12px, centered under every second major line, like "02:00").
- A soft drop shadow under the paper (dy 3, blur 4, #5A5540 at 22%) and a faint curl: black at 7% fading to 0 over the top and bottom 6% of the band.
- Footer on the desk color: source on the left at x 40, a log reference right aligned at x 920, baseline 580.

Axes and grid:
- Recorder grid, not chart gridlines: major lines 0.9px #8DBB8F at every whole unit (every hour, every 100 units), minor lines 0.6px #C9DEC2 at five or six subdivisions between them. The grid is dense on purpose.
- No separate axis lines beyond the grid frame. Scale numbers are printed in the green paper ink, not black.

Marks:
- Line chart: the main series is the red pen, drawn twice: an ink-bleed underlay 3.4px at 35% opacity blurred with a 0.7px Gaussian, then the 1.7px core with round joins and caps. At each sharp turn in the trace, add a 2.6px radius ink pool (red at 75%, same blur). The second series is the blue pen, 1.5px, dashed 7 3 so it stays distinguishable without color. Straight segments between samples, never smoothed.
- Bar chart: draw each bar as a pen-filled column: 1.7px red outline with a hatched fill of 0.8px red strokes at 45 degrees every 4px, square corners, bars about 60% of the band, sitting on a 1.6px grid-green baseline. A second series uses the blue pen with the hatch in the opposite direction.

Labels and annotation:
- Event notes are rubber stamps: a paper-colored rectangle with a 1.6px stamp-ink border and an inner 0.6px border inset 3px, text inset 8px, the whole stamp at 92% opacity. Each stamp connects to its point on the trace with a 0.9px stamp-ink leader ending in an open 3px circle.
- Pen key in a paper-colored box with a 1px grid-green border at the top left of the grid: a 32px pen sample and "PEN 1 KILN TC-1" style labels.

Avoid: smooth curves, gradients on the data, drop shadows on marks, handwriting fonts, colored backgrounds for stamps, and any sans-serif type.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the perforations run the full width at top and bottom, the printed numbers are green and never clipped at the canvas edge, the stamps never cover the trace, and the red and blue pens stay distinguishable where they run close together.
