Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Storybook Spread" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an open picture book lying flat, the chart printed across a two-page spread. Warm, friendly and tactile, like cut paper glued onto a cream page, but laid out with a real book designer's restraint.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Canvas behind the book: #FBF3E4 (warm cream). Page paper: #FFF9EE, page border and stacked page edges #D9C4A2 with edge fills #F3E6CF and #EAD9BD.
- Series 1: #E5533D (tomato red). Series 2: #5B7FD6 (cornflower). Additional series, if any: #E7A83A then #4E9E6B.
- Title ink #3B2A20. Secondary text #7A6452. Dotted gridlines #E6D6BD. Baseline #C9B08C.
- Shadows and the gutter are #8A6A45 at low opacity (see Effects).

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Baloo 2 800, 32px, #3B2A20 for the title, sentence case, stating the finding. Baloo 2 600, 16px, #7A6452 for the page numbers.
- Andika for everything else: subtitle 14.5px #7A6452 (measure, unit, place, period); axis labels 14px (x labels 700); bubble labels 700 15px #3B2A20; source and unit notes italic 12px #7A6452.

Layout:
- Draw the book: a page shape from x 26 to 934 and y 22 to 566, with gently curved top and bottom edges that dip slightly toward the center (quadratic curves, about 6px), filled #FFF9EE with a 1px #D9C4A2 border. Under it, two stacked page-edge shapes offset 3px and 6px downward.
- A 1px #C9B08C spine line at x = 480 with the gutter shadow over it (see Effects). Only the chart runs across the spread; text never does.
- Set the title and subtitle entirely on the left page, broken into lines that end well before the gutter (about x 440): title lines at y 76 and 108 from x 76, subtitle lines at y 134 and 153.
- Plot from x 116 to 880, y 196 to 480. Lower corners: page number "14" at bottom-left (x 62, y 548) and "15" at bottom-right, with "Source: illustrative data" next to the left page number and a short unit note next to the right one.

Axes and grid:
- No axis lines except a 2px #C9B08C rounded baseline at zero. Gridlines are 1.5px #E6D6BD dots (dasharray 0.5 7, round caps), extending 18px past the plot on both sides.
- Y labels right-aligned 30px left of the plot, Andika 14px. Month labels centered 30px below the baseline.

Marks:
- Line chart: 7px lines with round caps and joins, smoothed with a monotone curve that never overshoots. Each line has a soft copy offset (2.5, 3.5) in #8A6A45 at 16% opacity underneath. Every point gets a cut-paper disc: r 9 in the series color with a 2.5px #FFF9EE rim, a shadow disc offset (2.5, 3) in #8A6A45 at 22%, and a small r 2.4 white highlight at 55% opacity up and left of center.
- Bar chart: chunky rounded-top bars (radius 10) in the series colors, each with a 2.5px #FFF9EE rim, the same offset paper shadow, grouped side by side with 6px gaps; value labels in Andika 700 above each bar. Bars start at zero on the baseline.

Labels and annotation:
- Name each series with a label bubble instead of a legend: a white pill (height 32, radius 16) with a 2.5px outline in the series color, a small r 5 dot in the series color at the left, text like "Picture books: 610 in July", and a triangular tail pointing at a notable point on that line. The bubble casts the same offset paper shadow. Keep each bubble wholly on one page: if the point sits near the gutter, slide the bubble onto the page that holds the point and let the tail reach back.

Effects:
- Gutter shadow: an 88px-wide rectangle centered on x 480 filled with a horizontal gradient of #8A6A45 at 0, 10%, 24% (center), 10%, 0 opacity. Also a 46px fade of #8A6A45 at 10% into each outer page edge.

Avoid: cartoon clip art, stickers, rainbow palettes, drop shadows with blur, heavy outlines on the book, a boxed legend, and any title, subtitle, bubble or label crossing the gutter.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the gutter reads as a soft fold without hiding data, the bubbles point at the right points, do not cover the lines and do not straddle the gutter, no text crosses the gutter, both page numbers sit in the lower corners, and the title's claim matches the data.
