Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Storage Annual" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a water authority's long-term storage board on a dark wall display. Sober and poster-like: a tall condensed headline, steady deep blue years, and warm sandy years that stand out as the droughts.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #161C24 (dark graphite blue).
- Normal bars: #2C6FA8 (deep water blue). Highlighted exception bars (drought years): #D9A441 (sandy ochre), also used for the eyebrow and the highlighted values.
- Target band: #7FB2D9 at 12% opacity, with 1px #7FB2D9 dashed 5 3 edges at 60% opacity.
- Ink: #E8ECF1. Secondary text: #8B96A3. Gridlines: #252E3A. Baseline: #56626F.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Bebas Neue 44px, #E8ECF1, 0.8px letter-spacing for the title, stating the finding.
- Libre Franklin for everything else: eyebrow 12px 600 uppercase with 2.6px letter-spacing in #D9A441; subtitle 15px #8B96A3; legend 13px 500; axis numbers 12.5px #8B96A3; year labels 12.5px 600 #E8ECF1 every fifth year with 6px ticks; highlighted values 12px 700; notes on exception bars 11px italic 500 in the page color, rotated 90 degrees to read upward from 7px above the bar's base; source 12px.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Eyebrow at y 50, title at y 96, subtitle at y 124, legend at y 156 (12px swatches, a small outlined band swatch for the target range).
- Plot from x 96 to 904 and y 186 to 494, bars about 70% of the band (21px at 26 years).

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal 1px #252E3A gridlines every 25% with labels right aligned 12px left of the plot; a 1.2px #56626F baseline; no vertical grid.

Marks:
- Bar chart: square-cornered bars from zero, #2C6FA8 for ordinary years and #D9A441 for the exception years, each exception carrying its value above the bar in #D9A441 and a two- or three-word italic note running up its base. The target range band sits behind the bars. Label the latest bar's value in #E8ECF1.
- Line chart: a 2.4px #2C6FA8 line with 4px dots, the exception years as 6px #D9A441 dots with their value above and a short italic note below the point, over the same target band.

Avoid: rounded corners, gradients, glows, shadows, labeling every bar, and truncating the value axis.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every italic note fits inside its bar (shorten it if not), the title's count of years below target matches the data, and the headline fits within the right margin.
