Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Stone Mill" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the year-end ledger of a small stone-ground flour mill. Warm, grounded and orderly: pale wheat paper, grain-colored bars, a double ledger rule and small rounded chips like hand-written sack tags.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F5EEDC (pale wheat) for the whole canvas.
- Category colors by family: #C99A4B (toasted wheat), #7A5234 (rye brown), #B5A27A (spelt gray-gold). The third color is close in lightness to the first, so always overlay it with a husk hatch: 45-degree lines every 5px, 1.3px wide, in #F5EEDC at 60% opacity.
- Ink for title, labels, chips and rules: #3E2A1A (dark brown). Secondary text: #7B6A55. Group divider rule: #8E8A82 (stone gray). Gridlines and footer rule: #E3D8BF.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Vollkorn 700 for the title (32px, #3E2A1A, stating the finding) and the headline total (38px, right-aligned). Vollkorn italic 400, 14px, for group subtotals and the footer note. Use lining figures (font-variant-numeric: lining-nums).
- Cabin Condensed for everything else: eyebrow 13px 600 uppercase with 2.6px letter-spacing in #7B6A55; subtitle 16px #7B6A55 naming measure and unit and what the chip shows; category labels 15px 500 right-aligned; value labels 12.5px 600 inside the bar end; chip numbers 11px 700; group headers 11px 700 uppercase with 2px letter-spacing; axis labels 13px; source 12.5px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow at y 58, title at y 100, subtitle at y 128. The total sits at the top right: a small uppercase "TOTAL MILLED" label above a 38px Vollkorn figure.
- A double ledger rule under the header: 1.4px #3E2A1A with a 0.5px line 4px below it.
- A one-line legend under the rule: 14 x 10 px swatches (radius 2) with 14px 600 names, then a sample chip with "Protein, %".
- Category labels end at x 248; bars start at x 260 and the scale runs to x 800, leaving room for chips.
- Rows 36px apart, split into two groups. Each group has a small uppercase header and an italic subtotal at the left margin. A 1.2px #8E8A82 rule with 2.5px dots at both ends spans the full width between the groups.
- Footer rule (#E3D8BF) at y 556; "Source: ..." left and an italic note right at y 578.

Axes and grid:
- Vertical 1px #E3D8BF gridlines at round values, running the full height of both groups. Tick labels below the last row ("5k", "10k"), with the unit after the last one. No axis lines.

Marks:
- Bar chart: horizontal bars 20px tall with 3px rounded right ends, square at the baseline, filled by family color. The value sits inside the bar end, right-aligned 8px from the tip, in #3E2A1A (in #F5EEDC on the dark rye bars). 8px after each bar, a chip: a 38 x 15 px pill (radius 7.5) filled #F5EEDC with a 1px #3E2A1A outline and the secondary figure centered in it.
- Line chart: 2.5px lines in the family colors with straight segments (the spelt line dashed 6 3 instead of hatched), small r 3.5 dots, and at each line's last point the same outlined chip carrying the latest value, followed by the series name in 15px Cabin Condensed 500. Keep the double ledger rule, grouped legend and top-right total.

Avoid: gradients, shadows, bright or saturated colors, a boxed legend, gridlines between rows, and chips that touch the bar or each other.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the headline percentage and total match the data, the hatched family is clearly distinct from the plain one, chips all line up 8px after their bars, and the divider sits exactly between the two groups.
