Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Starfield" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a modern astronomy atlas. Quiet deep space, a faint nebula, and the data drawn as a constellation of stars on a star-chart grid.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Sky: a diagonal linear gradient (top-left to bottom-right, slightly tilted) from #060A1A through #0B1230 at 60% to #151A3E.
- Stars and title: #F4F1E6, star cores pure white.
- Constellation lines and the constellation name: #9FB7FF.
- Highlight star and its label, and the meteor streak: gold #F2C36B.
- Chart frame, ticks and grid: #7B8CC4 at low opacity (frame 45%, ticks 55%, gridlines 28%, verticals 16%).
- Subtitle, axis labels and footer: #8C96B8.
- Additional series, in order: #9FB7FF, #F2C36B, #F4A6C8 (rose), #8FE3D0 (teal). Keep star glows in each series' color.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Cormorant Garamond: title 38px 500 in sentence case; subtitle 19px italic 400; the highlight value 30px 500 (old-style figures show naturally); the constellation name 16px italic 500 in spaced capitals (letters separated by spaces, 3px letter-spacing).
- DM Mono: axis labels 12px 300 (dates uppercase with 1.5px letter-spacing, like "AUG 12"); unit tag under the highlight value 11px 400 uppercase with 2px letter-spacing; footer 11px with 1.5 to 2px letter-spacing, "SOURCE: ILLUSTRATIVE DATA" left and a technical epoch/coordinate note right.

Background:
- About 420 seeded background stars: radius 0.55px (most), 1px (about 12%) or 1.5px (3%), opacity 25% to 85%, a few tinted #CFDBFF or #FFE7C2. The brightest 1.5% get 5px four-point spikes. Keep them out of label boxes.
- Nebula: two feTurbulence fractalNoise layers (baseFrequency about 0.006 x 0.009, 4 octaves; and 0.011 x 0.007, 3 octaves) mapped to violet and teal with a color matrix, blurred 6px, masked by a radial gradient centered upper right, at 75% opacity.
- One meteor streak in the sky above the plot: a 1.6px line fading from transparent to #FFF4DA with a small bright head.

Axes and grid:
- A star-chart frame around the plot: a 0.8px rectangle plus a second one 5px outside it at 30% opacity, with degree ticks every 8px along all four inner edges (2.5px long, 5px every 64px).
- Straight horizontal gridlines, 0.7px, dotted 1/4, with a solid zero line. Faint vertical lines at labeled dates. No axis lines beyond the frame.
- Y labels right-aligned just outside the frame; x labels below it at every other point, including the highlighted one.

Marks:
- Line chart: every data point is a star. Its radius is 2 + 0.55 x sqrt(value) (so brighter values are bigger stars): a glow circle 4x that radius filled with a radial gradient (white center, #F4F1E6 at 85% by 25%, #9FB7FF at 18% by 60%, transparent at the edge) and a pure white core at 0.55x the radius. The largest stars also get soft four-point diffraction spikes (1px lines 3.6x the radius, blurred 1.2px, plus crisp ones at 2.4x). Join the stars with straight 1.2px #9FB7FF lines at 75% opacity that stop 6px short of each star's radius, like constellation diagrams. No area fill, no smoothing.
- Bar chart: draw each bar as a thin 1px #9FB7FF outline at 60% opacity with a faint vertical gradient fill (15% at the top to 0), topped by a star sized by the value as above; stars on neighboring bars joined by constellation lines.
- Highlight the key point in gold: a gold radial glow instead of the blue one, a 30px gold leader line, the value in large serif and the unit tag below it.
- Label the series with its name in spaced italic capitals near its tail, the way a constellation is named on a chart. For several series, one name per series in its color.

Avoid: neon glows, saturated gradients, bold sans type, drop shadows, thick lines, bars as solid blocks, and a cluttered star field (keep the data stars clearly the brightest things on the page).

When you're done, render the chart and check that the data stars stand out from the background stars, no background star lands inside a label, the constellation gaps are even, and the highlighted value matches the data.
