Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Standards Manual" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a 1970s corporate identity standards manual. Bright white paper, a visible modular grid, registration marks, a numbered section, heavy flush-left type and a sparse two-color identity palette. Disciplined, systematic, confident.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #FFFFFF.
- Signal red #E2231A: the one series the story is about, and the section number.
- Deep blue #0D3B8C: the single counterpoint series.
- Warm gray #9C948A: every other series.
- Black #111111: headline, rules, registration marks, specification headings. Secondary text: #6B655E. Modular grid lines: #ECE9E4.

Typography (Google Fonts), everything flush left:
- Archivo Black: section number 34px in red, headline 30px black stating the finding, rank numbers 18px white inside discs.
- Archivo: section label 700 11px uppercase with 2.4px letter-spacing and a 400 11px sub-label under it; subtitle 400 14px #6B655E; series names 14px (700 in the series color for red and blue, 500 in #6B655E or black for gray); period labels 600 12px with 1px letter-spacing; year labels 700 12px with 1.5px letter-spacing over a 1.5px black rule; specification headings 700 10px uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing; specification notes 400 11px, 15px leading.

Layout:
- 56px page margins. A 12-column modular grid of 1px #ECE9E4 lines runs across the whole page, with horizontal module rows 50px apart that line up exactly with the rank rows.
- Registration marks (a 6px radius circle with a 22px crosshair, 0.8px black) in all four corners, 28px from the edges.
- Top left: section number "4.2" in red, then to its right the section label ("DATA DISPLAY") and sub-label. Headline below at y 128, subtitle at y 154.
- The chart occupies the left three quarters. A narrow specification column on the right (about 140px wide, starting at x 764) is separated by a 1px black vertical rule and holds numbered notes: 4.2.1 Reading (how to read the chart), 4.2.2 Color (22 x 10 px swatches with one-line keys), 4.2.3 Line (the stroke spec), 4.2.4 Note (one editorial remark).
- Footer: a 1.5px black rule at y 548, source on the left, a folio like "IDENTITY STANDARDS 4.2 PAGE 38" in 700 10px uppercase on the right.

Axes and grid:
- No axis lines. The modular grid is the only grid. Period labels sit under the last row; group periods by year with a short black 1.5px rule and the year label above the plot.

Marks:
- Line chart (bump or rank chart): 10px lines with round caps and round joins, each transition drawn as an S-curve (cubic with horizontal tangents at both ends), and an 18px white keyline under each line so crossings stay clean. Draw gray first, then blue, then red on top. Each line ends in a 19px radius disc in its color with a 3px white ring, containing its final rank in Archivo Black 18px white; the series name sits 30px to the right. Names at the start are right aligned 22px before the first point. For an ordinary line chart use the same 10px round-joined lines, the same end discs holding the last value, and one row of the modular grid per axis step.
- Bar chart: square-cornered horizontal or vertical bars snapped to the modular grid (one module row per bar, bar thickness 60% of the row), gray by default, red for the highlighted bar, blue for one counterpoint; the value in Archivo Black at the bar end.

Avoid: gradients, shadows, rounded rectangles, more than two accent colors, centered text, italic type, legends floating in the plot (use the specification column).

When you're done, render the chart and check that everything is flush left on the grid, the rank rows sit exactly on module lines, crossings are separated by the white keyline, only one series is red and one is blue, and all four registration marks are inside the canvas.
