Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Staff Lines" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page of an engraved orchestral score. Clean white paper, black notation and a single deep crimson accent for the climax. Quiet, exact and musical: the gridlines are a five-line staff and the data points are notes.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF.
- Ink for notation, title, barlines and ordinary marks: #1A1A1A. Staff lines use the same ink at 55% stroke opacity.
- Accent: #9B1C2E (deep crimson), used only for the climax section or series (its notes, connecting line, tempo marking, section numeral and the annotation), never for anything else.
- Secondary text (subtitle, axis numbers, durations, footer): #6B6B6B.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Petrona throughout. Title 600, 29px, ink, sentence case, stating the finding. Subtitle 400, 16px, #6B6B6B, naming measure and unit.
- Tempo or section markings above the plot in Petrona italic 600, 16px (ink, or crimson for the climax), like "Allegro con brio".
- Metronome values 15px regular under each marking: a small drawn quarter note (filled ellipse rx 4.6, ry 3.3 rotated -22 degrees, with a 15px stem of 1.2px) followed by "= 132".
- Section numerals (roman: I, II, III, IV) 700, 21px, centered under each section, with a 13px #6B6B6B duration line beneath. Axis numbers 13px #6B6B6B. The unit ("bpm") in 13px italic above the axis numbers.
- Footer 12px italic #6B6B6B.

Layout:
- 64px side margins. Title baseline near y 70, subtitle y 98. Tempo markings row at y 162 and 191, staff from y 224 to 452, section numerals near y 510, a 0.6px hairline at y 558 and the footer at y 580 ("Source: ..." left, a short total at right).
- The plot runs from x 124 to 896.

Axes and grid:
- Replace the gridlines with a five-line staff: exactly five evenly spaced horizontal lines covering the value range (for a 40 to 200 range: 40, 80, 120, 160, 200), 1px ink at 55% opacity. Label each line at its left end, right-aligned 14px before the staff start.
- A 1.4px opening barline at the left edge of the staff. Divide sections (movements, phases, periods) with double barlines: two 1.1px lines 5px apart spanning the staff. End with a final barline: a 1.1px line 7px from the end plus a 4px solid bar at the end.
- No x-axis line beyond the staff; the barlines and section numerals do that job. Section widths can be proportional to their duration on the x axis.

Marks:
- Line chart: each data point is a filled note head, an ellipse rx 8.6, ry 6.2 rotated -22 degrees, in ink (crimson in the climax section), with a 1.5px white outline to lift it from staff lines. Each gets a 36px stem, 1.5px: points below the middle staff line have the stem up on the right side, points on or above it have the stem down on the left side, as in real notation. A thin straight line (1.3px ink, 1.8px crimson in the climax) connects the note heads in order across sections and barlines.
- Bar chart: draw each bar as a slender vertical "stem" bar 10px wide in ink topped with a note head sitting on its value, still over the five-line staff, with double barlines between groups of categories and the climax category in crimson. Keep value labels in Petrona 700 15px above the note heads.

Labels and annotation:
- Label the highest value in crimson Petrona 700 15px next to its note (with a 5px white halo) and the lowest value in ink 700 15px just below the staff.
- Mark a rising climax with an italic crimson "accel." (15px 600) under the staff, followed by a 1.2px crimson dashed line (5 on, 4 off) ending in a short vertical tick, the way a score marks an accelerando. Use "rit." for a falling stretch.

Avoid: color fills, backgrounds, legends, shadows, gradients, sans-serif type, and more than one accent color. Do not draw clefs or real musical symbols you cannot render cleanly.

When you're done, render the chart and check that there are exactly five staff lines, stems point the correct way relative to the middle line, double barlines fall exactly on section boundaries, only the climax is crimson, and the title's number matches the data.
