Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Spine Shelf" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a row of cloth-bound books on a brass shelf in a dim, green-walled library. Rich, scholarly and tactile, with gilt stamping and a call-number label.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #132019 (library green-black); recessed shelf back #0F1A14; shadow under the shelf #0A120D.
- Cloth colors, cycled in this order: #7A2430 oxblood, #26395F navy buckram, #C9A13B mustard, #3F6B4A forest, #CFC3A4 faded linen.
- Brass shelf: #B8914A. Gilt stamping and values: #D9B866 (dark ink #2A2114 or #3B3222 on the light mustard and linen spines).
- Title #EFE6D0; secondary text #8FA396. Call-number label paper #E8DFC8.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Libre Caslon Text for the title (400, 30px, stating the finding), subtitle (italic 16px, secondary color), source line (italic 13px) and gilt values (700, 17px).
- Oswald for spine lettering: 500 weight, uppercase, 15px with 1.5px letter-spacing, rotated -90 degrees so it reads bottom to top, centered in the spine; shrink it in 0.5px steps (to 11px minimum) when a short spine can't hold it. Oswald also for the call-number label (500 14px and 400 11px) and the footer total (13px, 1.2px letter-spacing).

Layout:
- 64px side margins. Title at y 70, subtitle at y 102, and a call-number label in the top right: a 128 x 58px #E8DFC8 card with 3px radius and an inner 0.8px #9C8E6E border, two lines of condensed text.
- The shelf back runs from y 150 to the shelf at y 520; spines are centered on it.
- Footer at y 566: source at left, a computed total at right.

Axes and grid:
- No y-axis and no gridlines: each spine carries its gilt value 12px above its head. The brass shelf (5px, with two tiny darker screw dots) is the baseline, with a 10px shadow band beneath.

Marks:
- Bar chart: vertical spines 74px wide with 5px gaps, 2px radius, standing edge to edge on the shelf. Each spine has a darker 6px left and 5px right edge (black at 16% and 12%) to suggest a rounded back, a stamped head band (a 12px black 18% panel between two 1px gilt rules 8px and 24px below the top), and on tall spines a small gilt lozenge imprint mark 16px above the shelf.
- Line chart: draw the line in gilt #D9B866 at 2.5px over the dark library ground, with the brass shelf as its baseline, small cloth-colored square markers (8px) at each point, and gilt values above the key points; label series in rotated Oswald like spine lettering.

Avoid: gradients, glossy highlights, drop shadows under text, gridlines, legends, bright saturated colors, and spine text that overflows its spine or collides with the head band.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every spine label fits inside its spine, the values sit clear of the head bands, the cloth colors alternate so neighbours never match, and the title's percentage is computed from the data.
