Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Speed Lines" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a 1930s streamliner timetable poster. Fast, sleek and machined: cream card stock, one heavy black line with a chrome shadow, and a plot panel shaped like the rounded nose of a streamlined locomotive.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F2EBDC (cream). Plot panel fill: #E7DDC8 (slightly darker cream).
- Primary ink and the data line: #141414 (engine black).
- Chrome silver #A9AEB3 for the shadow line, the panel's inner pinstripe and the third speed line.
- Steel #6B7076 for axis labels, the eyebrow, minor year labels and the second speed line. Warm gray #5C564B for the subtitle, notes and source.
- Gridlines inside the panel are drawn in the page cream #F2EBDC (light rules on the darker panel).

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Poiret One 400 for the title only: 46px, #141414, 0.5px letter-spacing, sentence case, stating the finding ("Ten years, 35 mph faster").
- Josefin Sans for everything else: eyebrow 12px 600 uppercase, 3.2px letter-spacing, steel; subtitle 16px 400 warm gray; axis labels 14px 600 steel; unit label "MPH" 11px 700 with 2.4px letter-spacing; year labels 14px with 1px letter-spacing (even years 600 black, odd years 400 steel); endpoint value labels 700 (16px start, 20px end); annotation 13px (first line 600 black, others 400 warm gray); source 12px; folio 11px 600 uppercase, 2.4px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow at y 58, title baseline at y 110, subtitle at y 144.
- Speed lines: three thin parallel horizontal lines trail from the end of the title to the right edge of the canvas (bleeding off): at y 96 (2.4px black), y 104 (1.4px steel) and y 112 (1px silver), each starting 26px further right than the one above, with round caps and a small gap after the last letter of the title.
- Plot panel from x 56 to 904, y 178 to 492. Its right side is square; its left side is a full half-ellipse nose (horizontal radius 118px, vertical radius half the panel height), so the whole left edge is one smooth curve. An inner 1px silver pinstripe follows the panel outline 8px inside.
- Footer: a 1.2px black rule at y 540 with a 1px silver rule 5px below it, then "Source: ..." left and a small folio ("TIMETABLE No. 40 · WESTBOUND") right at y 570.

Axes and grid:
- No axis lines. Horizontal gridlines are 1.4px cream (#F2EBDC) rules clipped to the panel shape, so they end on the curved nose.
- Y labels sit inside the nose, right-aligned at x 190, with the unit "MPH" above the top label. Year labels centered 26px below the panel.

Marks:
- Line chart: the data line is 6px #141414 with round caps and round joins, straight segments. A parallel 2px #A9AEB3 shadow line runs 11px directly below it (same shape, shifted down). Start point: r 7 cream-filled circle with a 3px black ring. End point: r 9 black disc with a r 3.5 silver center. Label both endpoints with value and unit. Mark a key event with a 1px black dotted vertical (2 on, 4 off) and a three-line note.
- Bar chart: slim vertical #141414 bars (about 40% of the band) with square bases and tops rounded at a radius of half the bar width, each paired with a 2px #A9AEB3 shadow stripe drawn 11px to its right at the same height, like a chrome trim line. Draw them inside the same nose-shaped panel with cream gridlines. The latest bar gets its value label in Josefin Sans 20px 700.

Avoid: gradients, drop shadows, bright color, heavy axes, more than one heavy black element per series, and square left corners on the panel.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the speed lines start just after the title without touching it and bleed off the right edge, that gridlines stop on the curved nose, that the silver shadow stays exactly parallel to the black line, and that the headline number matches the data.
