Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Soiling Loss" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a desert solar plant's operations review. Warm, dusty and calm, with an editorial serif headline: sand-colored paper, a brown line that sags and recovers, and tan shading for what was lost.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F4ECDD (sand) for the whole canvas.
- Measured series: #7A4E2D (dusty brown).
- Expected or reference series: #2F3A42 (dark slate), dashed.
- Gap between expected and measured (the loss): #E2CA9F (pale tan) fill.
- Event markers (cleanings, resets, maintenance): #2E7DC4 (water blue).
- Title and dark text: #33291F. Secondary text: #7A6B58. Gridlines: #E1D4BD.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Fraunces 600 (optical size axis available) for the title: 34px, #33291F, -0.4px letter-spacing, sentence case, stating the finding with a computed number.
- Archivo for everything else: eyebrow 12px 600 uppercase with 2.4px letter-spacing in #7A4E2D; subtitle 15px #7A6B58 with measure, unit and period; legend 13px #33291F; y labels 13px #7A6B58; month labels 13px 600 #33291F; annotation 13px (600 for the headline line); source 12px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow at y 46, title baseline about y 92, subtitle about 28px below, legend row at about y 158.
- Plot from about x 96 to x 904 and y 196 to y 488. A row of water-drop markers 20px below the baseline and month labels centered in each month about 44px below it. Source line bottom left at y 574 and a small fact (e.g. "6 cleanings in six months") bottom right.

Axes and grid:
- Y axis zoomed to the data range (a line chart may start above zero), labels every 2 units right-aligned 12px left of the plot, full-width 1px #E1D4BD gridlines. No y axis line.
- A 1.2px #33291F baseline with 6px ticks at month boundaries.

Marks:
- Line chart: the measured series as a 2.2px #7A4E2D line with round joins and straight segments (daily data, keep its texture), the expected series as a 1.6px #2F3A42 dashed line (5 on, 3 off), and the region between them filled solid #E2CA9F. At each reset event draw a water drop in #2E7DC4 on the axis row (a teardrop about 12px wide, 14px tall, point up) and a 1px dotted (1.5 on, 3 off) #2E7DC4 line at 80% opacity from the measured line down to the baseline.
- Bar chart: square-cornered #7A4E2D bars about 60% of the band for the measured value, each with a #E2CA9F cap segment stacked on top up to the expected value (the loss), and a 1.6px #2F3A42 dashed tick across the band at the expected value. Event days get the same blue drop under the axis.

Labels and annotation:
- One annotation for the most striking event: a 3.5px open circle (1.2px #33291F stroke) on the line, a 0.9px vertical leader down into open space, and a two-line right-aligned note (headline 13px 600, detail 13px #7A6B58), with every number computed from the data.
- Legend in one row: dashed line swatch, solid line swatch, a 22 x 12 tan box and a blue drop.

Avoid: smoothing the daily line, drop shadows, gradients, bright or saturated fills, a second y axis, and any blue other than the event markers.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every drop sits exactly under a recovery jump, the tan fill never crosses above the expected line, the headline percentage matches the average gap in the data, and the annotation does not collide with the line or the drops.
