Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Slide Rule" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an engineer's precision slide rule. Each bar is an ivory scale stock sliding in the rule body, engraved with fine graduations, and a glass cursor with a red hairline marks the reading. Quiet, exact and tactile.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F3EFE4 for the whole canvas.
- Ivory stock: #F8F2DF, as a vertical gradient from #FFFDF4 (top) through #F8F2DF (18%) to #EDE4CB (bottom), with a 0.8px #BFB293 outline and a soft 1.5px drop shadow (#5A4E36, 30%, blur 1.2).
- Rule body (the groove behind each stock): #DDD3B9 with a 0.8px #CBBF9F outline and a 0.8px #B9AD8C line along its top inside edge.
- Engraving: #1E1B18 for graduations, numerals, title and the double rule under the header. Secondary text #6F685C.
- Cursor hairline: #C7312B (red). The top-ranked value label is also red.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Libre Baskerville: title 700 at 27px, stating the finding; scale letters (A, B, C, D, E) 400 at 24px beside each row.
- Cousine for everything else: subtitle 13px 400; row names 15px 700; row notes 11.5px 400 in #6F685C; stock numerals 10px; value labels 15px 700; master-scale numerals 12px; nameplate 10.5px 700 uppercase with 1.2px letter-spacing; source 11px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Title at y 72, subtitle at y 102, then a double rule (1px and 0.5px, 3px apart) at y 124.
- Rows 66px apart starting at y 150; each stock 34px tall. Left column: scale letter centered at x 64, name at x 94 with a note line beneath.
- Scale from x 288 to 900. A maker's nameplate at lower right: a 240 x 30 ivory plate with a 0.8px outline and a second 0.4px outline inset 3px. Source at lower left.

Axes and grid:
- No gridlines. Graduations along the top edge of every stock, on a shared linear scale: every 5 units 3px, every 10 units 5.5px, every 50 units 8.5px, every 100 units 12px, all 0.7px engraved lines. Stock numerals (in hundreds) centered 25px below the stock top at each 100.
- A master scale under the last row: 1px baseline with ticks every 10 (4px), 50 (7px) and 100 (10px), numerals 26px below, and the unit at the left.

Marks:
- Bar chart (horizontal): the rule body spans the full scale width, 10px taller than the stock; the ivory stock runs from zero to the value and ends in a 1.2px #A89A78 end line. The cursor is a 26px-wide glass window (white gradient at 55%, 15%, 35% opacity) with a 1.2px #2E2A25 frame, 3px radius, extending 9px above and below the stock, with dark #3A352E bracket bars (5px tall) top and bottom, and a 1.3px red hairline at the exact value. Value label 10px right of the cursor.
- Line chart: draw the x axis as a full-width stock with graduations and each series as a 1.5px #1E1B18 line with small open-circle points (r 3, 1px); mark the latest point of each series with a narrow glass cursor and red hairline running the full plot height, and label the value beside it. Distinguish series by dash (solid, 5 3, 1 3) rather than color.

Avoid: saturated colors besides the cursor red, rounded bars, gradients on the page, gridlines across the plot, and sans-serif titles.

When you're done, render the chart and check that graduations line up across all stocks, each hairline sits exactly at its value, stock numerals never collide with the cursor frame, and the nameplate reads cleanly.
