Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Signature Count" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a bindery's ledger printed on handmade laid paper. Warm, tactile and exact, like a page from a fine press specimen book, with the x-axis bound as a book spine.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F5EFE1 (warm laid paper). Laid lines: a pattern of 1px horizontal lines every 3px in #E9DFCB at 55% opacity. Chain lines: 1.2px vertical lines every 27px in #E4D9C2 at 80% opacity.
- Data: #7A1F2B (oxblood) for the line, the station rings and the highlighted value.
- Spine: #5A3424 leather, with a vertical gradient from #6E4230 at the top through #5A3424 to #3E2318 at the bottom. Raised bands use a horizontal gradient #3E2318, #8A5A40, #3E2318.
- Gold leaf: #D4AF62 for spine lettering, fillet lines on the spine and the final-value label type.
- Title ink: #2E2118. Secondary text: #7B6A58. Gridlines and footer rule: #D8CCB3.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- EB Garamond 600, 36px, #2E2118 for the title, sentence case, stating the finding. EB Garamond 700 21px for the number in the final-value label.
- Alegreya Sans SC (small caps family; lowercase letters render as small capitals) for everything else: subtitle 17px 400 with 0.6px letter-spacing in #7B6A58; y labels 15px; month labels 15px; annotations 14px; spine lettering 700 14px with 2px letter-spacing in gold; label caption 500 10px with 1.2px letter-spacing; source and footer note 13px.

Layout:
- 64px side margins. Title baseline at 66, subtitle at 96. Plot from x 104 to 790, y 138 to 432, leaving room on the right for the final-value label.
- The spine sits 20px below the plot (y 452 to 486), spanning the full x range plus half a period and 14px on each side.
- Footer rule at y 546 in #D8CCB3; "Source: illustrative data" on the left and a totals note on the right, both at y 570.

Axes and grid:
- Y axis: 4 dotted gridlines (1px, dash 1 3, #D8CCB3) with labels right-aligned 28px left of the plot. No y axis line.
- X axis as a book spine: a 34px-tall rounded rect (radius 5) filled with the spine gradient, with 0.8px gold fillet lines 5px in from its top and bottom edges. Raised bands (8 x 40 px, radius 3.5, band gradient, 3px proud of the spine top and bottom, with a 0.8px #A87A5A highlight line) divide it into equal panels, one per half year here; each panel is lettered in gold small caps ("2024 · i", "2024 · ii"). Short 6px ticks in #7B6A58 and month labels hang below the spine every third period.

Marks:
- Line chart: one 2.6px oxblood line with straight segments and round joins, no area fill. Every point is a punched sewing station: a paper-colored circle r 4.2 with a 1.6px oxblood ring and a 1.5px dark dot (#2E2118 at 45%) slightly below center, like a pierced hole.
- Bar chart: slim oxblood bars (about 45% of the band) starting at zero, each with a 4px paper-colored punched hole ringed in oxblood centered 8px below the bar top; the spine forms the baseline and category labels hang below it.

Labels and annotation:
- The final value sits in a leather label to the right of the last point: a 110 x 44 rect in #5A3424 (radius 2) with a 0.8px gold inner rule inset 4px, the number in EB Garamond 700 21px gold and a small caps caption ("dec 2025") under it.
- One annotation for a notable earlier peak: the value in Alegreya Sans SC 700 16px oxblood, with a 14px #7B6A58 note above it.

Avoid: gloss, heavy shadows, more than one data color, a legend (the single series is named in the subtitle), and stretching the spine lettering across a raised band.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the spine lettering sits fully inside its panels, the stations read as punched holes at thumbnail size, the laid and chain lines stay faint, and the title's percentage matches the data.
