Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Shooting Days" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a daily production report pinned up in a film production office. Cream paper, a typewriter heading, black ink, and a hatched warning where the shoot is falling behind. Practical and exact.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FAF6ED (cream).
- Actual progress line, headline, rules and boxed counter: #1B1B1B.
- Plan or target line and its label: #8C8880 (warm gray).
- Shortfall hatching and its annotation: #B5452F (brick red).
- Secondary text: #6B665C. Gridlines and light rules: #DDD5C3.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Special Elite for the headline (30px, #1B1B1B, stating the gap in plain words), the boxed counter value (24px), the end-of-line value label (17px) and location names (13px).
- Karla for everything else: eyebrow 12px 700 uppercase with 2.4px letter-spacing in #6B665C; subtitle 16px 400 #6B665C with measure, unit and plan rate; axis labels 12 to 13px #6B665C; small uppercase axis captions ("PAGES", "LOCATION") 10px 700 with 1.5px letter-spacing; annotation 13px 700 plus a 12px 400 second line; source 12px; folio 11px 700 uppercase with 2px letter-spacing.

Layout:
- Eyebrow at top left, headline below, subtitle under that. Top right: a 152 x 56px box with a 1.2px #1B1B1B border split by a 0.8px rule; small caption "SHOOT DAY" above, the counter ("34 of 40") below.
- Under the header, a double rule across the page (1.2px then 0.6px, 4px apart).
- Plot area about x 96 to 880, y 184 to 454. Below it a location strip, then a footer rule at y 552 with the source left and a folio right.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines at 5 round values: dotted 1px #DDD5C3 (2 on, 3 off), the zero line solid. Right-aligned labels 12px left of the plot.
- A 1.2px #1B1B1B baseline with 5px ticks every 5 days, labeled below.

Marks:
- Line chart: the cumulative actual as a 2.6px #1B1B1B step line (flat through each day, vertical at the end of the day), ending in a 5px-radius black dot labeled with the total. The plan is a straight 2px #8C8880 dashed line (7 on, 5 off) over the full schedule. Wherever actual is below plan, fill the gap with diagonal hatching: a 6px pattern rotated 45 degrees, 2px #B5452F lines at 55% opacity over a 10% #B5452F wash (mask it with the area under the step line so only the shortfall shows). Nothing is filled when ahead.
- Bar chart: daily columns in #1B1B1B, square-cornered and about 60% of the band, with the plan level as a dashed #8C8880 rule and each column's shortfall to plan drawn as a hatched #B5452F cap above it.

Labels and annotation:
- Mark the worst shortfall with a 1.4px #B5452F vertical bracket (4px end caps) between plan and actual and a two-line brick label beside it.
- Location or phase changes: a strip under the axis with a 1px #DDD5C3 track, a 3px #1B1B1B segment for each phase, a 16px vertical tick at each change and the phase name in Special Elite 13px just below and right of the tick.

Avoid: color fills other than the hatching, smoothing the step line, rounded corners, drop shadows, bright colors, and hatching where actual is ahead of plan.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the headline gap equals plan minus actual at the last point, the hatching appears only where actual trails the plan, and the location labels do not collide with each other or the day labels.
