Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Shoji" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a paper sliding screen lit from behind. The plot is a lattice of tall paper panes held in a cedar frame; everything is quiet, orderly and warm, with one charcoal line and a single indigo accent.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Canvas: #F4F0E6 (screen paper).
- Lit panes inside the frame: a radial gradient centered at 50% x, 45% y, radius 70%, from #FCFAF3 through #F8F4EA (70%) to #EFE9DB at the edge, so the middle glows as if backlit.
- Cedar: #B99A72 for the lattice and frame, with #8E7351 for the frame's shaded edge, eyebrow text and hairline outlines.
- Charcoal: #2D2A26 for the primary series, title and value labels. Indigo: #34466B for the comparison series and the seal. Secondary text: #716A5F.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Shippori Mincho 700 for the title (28px) and data annotations (16 to 18px).
- Zen Kaku Gothic New for everything else: eyebrow 12px 500 uppercase with 3px letter-spacing in #8E7351; subtitle 17px 400 charcoal; legend 13px (700 for the primary series); tick labels 12 to 13px #716A5F; source 12px.

Layout:
- Eyebrow at top left (x 64, y 58), subtitle stating measure, unit and period below it (y 90), legend right-aligned to the frame just above it (y 113).
- The frame spans x 64 to 740, y 128 to 512. To its right, the title is set vertically: rotate each line 90 degrees so it reads top to bottom, in columns 40px apart read from right to left (first column at x 876), starting at y 128. A 1px #B99A72 vertical rule at x 764 separates it from the frame.
- Below the title, a square seal 88 x 88 px (x 808, y 424) filled indigo with a 1px inner keyline inset 4px in #FCFAF3 at 70% opacity, holding a tiny uppercase label (9px, 1.5px letter-spacing), the headline total in Shippori Mincho 700 26px and the change versus the comparison period in 10px, all in #FCFAF3.
- Source line at bottom left (y 572) and a short unit note at bottom right.

Axes and grid:
- The grid is a kumiko lattice: vertical stiles at every x category and horizontal rails at each round y value, each a 3px bar of #B99A72 at 42% opacity. At every crossing draw a 3 x 3 px square of #8E7351 at 45% opacity as the half-lap joint. The panes come out taller than they are wide.
- The frame: four 10px cedar bars around the plot, each with a gradient across its thickness (#8E7351 to #B99A72 at 35% to #A88A63), a 1px #8E7351 outer outline and a 1px inner outline at 60% opacity.
- Y tick labels sit outside the frame, right-aligned 10px left of it. X labels centered 24px below the frame; the peak category in 700 charcoal.

Marks:
- Line chart: the primary series is a 2px charcoal line with straight segments and 8 x 8 px square markers filled charcoal with a 1.5px #FCFAF3 ring. The comparison series is a 1.5px indigo line at 75% opacity with 2px round dots. Put points on the lattice stiles.
- Bar chart: slender charcoal bars (about 40% of the pane width) standing on the bottom frame bar, square corners, comparison bars in indigo at 75% opacity beside them; bar edges align with the stiles.

Labels and annotation:
- Label the one or two peaks with their value in Shippori Mincho just above the point and a short 11px Zen Kaku Gothic New note (1px letter-spacing, #716A5F) above that.

Avoid: drop shadows, heavy saturated colors, rounded corners, more than one accent color, and gridlines that are thin hairlines instead of lattice bars.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the lattice reads as wooden panes, the vertical title fits above the seal without touching it, the seal's total and percentage are arithmetically right, and no annotation touches the frame.
