Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Service Manual" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a vehicle workshop manual. Off-white paper, black technical linework, a two-column layout with procedure notes beside a numbered figure, a boxed amber CAUTION note and a black section tab on the right edge.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #F3F0E7. Ink for text, frames, the data line and callouts: #161616. Secondary text: #4A4843.
- Caution amber: #F2A900 (only the CAUTION header strip).
- Tolerance band: #CFCBC0 at 75% opacity with 0.8px #8A8780 edges. Grid rules: #B9B4A8.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Roboto Condensed: running head 700 12px uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing; section title 700 24px; subtitle 400 14px; column headings 700 12px uppercase 1.6px letter-spacing; body and notes 400 13 to 14px; CAUTION 700 15px with 2.4px letter-spacing; axis titles 700 11px uppercase.
- Roboto Mono: page number, section number (500, 22px), figure number ("FIG. 7-6", 700 12px), all axis tick values (400 12px) and all specification values (700 14px, e.g. "3.2 bar").

Layout:
- 40px left margin. Running head with the manual name left and page number right, over a 2px black rule.
- A black section tab on the right edge: 44 x 160px, left corners rounded 6px, flush with the right edge, with the chapter number (20px 700) and the chapter name rotated -90 degrees in paper color. A thin 0.8px rule runs down the page just left of the tab.
- Section number and title on one line, subtitle beneath.
- Left column about 230px wide: "PROCEDURE" heading over a 1px rule, then numbered steps (black r 10 circles with paper-colored mono numerals) each with a condensed label and a bold mono value; short notes; then the CAUTION box: 2px black border, a 30px amber header strip with a black warning triangle and "CAUTION", and 14px body text.
- Right column: a figure caption line ("FIG. 7-6" + title) over a 1px rule, then the plot in a 1.2px black frame.
- Footer rule with the source left and a revision label right (700 11px uppercase).

Axes and grid:
- Plot framed on all four sides. Dotted minor grid (0.5px #B9B4A8, 1 on 2 off) and solid major grid (0.9px). Mono tick values; 6px outside ticks on the x axis. Axis titles in uppercase condensed; the y title rotated.
- Limits as a dashed 1.2px black line (6 on, 3 off) with an uppercase condensed label on a paper-colored knockout.

Marks:
- Line chart: a 2.5px black line with straight segments and miter joins; each data point as a 7px paper-filled square with a 1.6px black stroke. A tolerance or uncertainty band behind it. Numbered callouts: black r 11 circles with mono numerals, joined to their points by 1px straight leaders, matching the numbered steps in the left column.
- Bar chart: square-cornered bars filled #CFCBC0 with a 1.2px black outline, the referenced bars numbered with the same black callout circles; error or tolerance ranges as black I-beams; values in bold mono above each bar.
- A small boxed legend inside the frame (paper fill, 0.8px black border).

Avoid: color beyond amber, gradients, shadows, rounded bars, decorative icons, sans-serif fonts other than the condensed face.

When you're done, render the chart and check that callout numbers match the left-column steps, the CAUTION box reads at thumbnail size, the section tab sits flush right, and the title's number matches the data.
