Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Sea Ice" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a polar research dashboard. Dozens of faint years drifting on a dark polar blue, fading in color with age, with the latest year cutting through in bright white.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #0A1628 (dark polar blue). Gridlines and baseline: #1C2C45. Secondary text: #8193AD.
- History lines fade from #9C8FC0 (dusty lavender, oldest) to #A6DCF2 (pale ice blue, most recent), interpolated linearly in RGB per year, with opacity rising from 0.4 to 0.75.
- Current or focus series: #FFFFFF. Record series and its label: #6FE6F2 (pale cyan).
- Reference band (for example an interdecile range): #8C97AA at 0.4 opacity.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Space Grotesk throughout. Title 28px 700 white with -0.4px letter-spacing, stating the finding; subtitle 15px 400 #8193AD; legend 12px; axis labels 12px #8193AD; end label year 14px 700, value 13px 500, date 11.5px #8193AD; record label 13px 600 cyan; source 12px.

Layout:
- 56px left margin. Title at y 64, subtitle at y 92, legend row at y 120: the first and last history years in their own colors either side of a 70 x 3 px gradient bar, a white line swatch for the current year, and a band swatch.
- Plot from x 72 to 856 and y 150 to 500. Source line at y 568.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines every 2 units, 1px #1C2C45, labels right-aligned 10px left of the plot. No vertical grid. Month ticks 5px below a 1.2px baseline, month abbreviations centered in each month.

Marks:
- Line chart: one 1px smooth line per past year (monotone curves), oldest drawn first. The record year drawn last among past years in 1.6px cyan, with a hairline down from its extreme point to a label ("2019 record low: 4.10M km²"). The current year is 2.6px white with round caps over a 5px background-colored halo, ending in a 4.5px white dot with a glow (an 11px white circle at 0.55 opacity blurred with stdDeviation 6); label it just below and to the right of the dot with year, value and date.
- Bar chart: one slim bar per category in the history fade (oldest lavender to newest ice blue) at 0.75 opacity, the current category solid white with the glow at its tip and a value label, the record category in cyan with its label, and the reference range as a translucent #8C97AA band behind the bars.

Avoid: a rainbow of year colors, thick history lines, a legend listing every year, gradients in the background, and labels sitting on top of the line bundle.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the fade runs oldest-lavender to newest-blue, the white series is clearly on top, the record label names the true record and its value, the end dot shows the last data value, and the rank claim in the title is correct.
