Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Screenplay" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page torn from a shooting script. Plain white paper, black typewriter ink, one red pencil used only by the editor. Every piece of text follows screenplay conventions, so the chart reads like part of the draft.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF for the whole canvas. No texture, no border.
- Ink: #111111 for the title, data line, axis baseline, tick labels on the x axis, the annotation and the (CONT'D) mark.
- Red pencil: #C0392B, used only for act breaks (or the chart's equivalent phase breaks) and their labels.
- Secondary text: #7A7A7A (running header, y tick labels, source, "PAGE" and "ACT I"). Dotted gridlines: #D6D6D6.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Courier Prime for every piece of text, no other family. Regular 400, bold 700 and italic 400 only.
- Scene heading, top left: bold 16px, all caps, in slugline form ("INT. HARBOR OFFICE - NIGHT"; invent one that suits the topic).
- Running header, top right: 14px #7A7A7A, "TITLE / DRAFT 3 / PAGE 14." style.
- Chart title: bold 23px, ALL CAPS, stating the finding, with a 1.5px #111111 underline 6px below the baseline that spans exactly the title width.
- Subtitle as an action line: 15px regular, sentence case, stating the measure, unit and scale.
- Tick labels 14px; act labels bold 14px; source 13px.

Layout:
- 72px left margin (screenplay left margin) and 72px right margin. Scene heading at y 54, title at y 96, subtitle at y 130.
- Plot area from about x 110 to 880 and y 188 to 468, leaving a wide white band above for act labels and the annotation.
- Footer at y 572: "Source: ..." on the left in #7A7A7A, and "(CONT'D)" on the right in bold 15px ink.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal dotted gridlines, 1px #D6D6D6, dash 2 on 5 off. No vertical grid.
- A 1.2px ink baseline. Y tick labels in #7A7A7A right-aligned 14px left of the plot.
- X tick labels written like script page numbers with a trailing period ("10.", "20.", "30."), 14px ink, below 5px ink tick marks. The word "PAGE" in #7A7A7A sits at the origin in place of 0. For non-page data keep the trailing period style on numbers or use all-caps short labels.
- Phase breaks (act breaks): 1.6px #C0392B dashed verticals (6 on, 4 off) that run from the top of the label band to the baseline, labeled at the top right of the line in bold 14px red caps ("ACT II", "ACT III"). "ACT I" in bold #7A7A7A at the start.

Marks:
- Line chart: a single 2px #111111 line with straight segments, round joins and caps, no markers except the key point: a solid 5px-radius ink dot inside a 10px-radius 1px ink ring. With several series, keep all in ink and separate them with dash patterns (solid, 6 4, 2 3) and a label at each line end in bold 14px caps.
- Bar chart: square-cornered bars filled #111111 at about 55% of the band width, or 1.5px ink outlines with white fill for secondary series; the key bar may carry a red pencil underline, never a red fill. Value labels in 14px Courier Prime above each bar.

Labels and annotation:
- Write the main annotation as dialogue, centered as a block in empty space above the data: a character cue in bold 15px caps (for example "SCRIPT SUPERVISOR"), a parenthetical in italic 14px on the next line ("(checking her notes)"), then one or two dialogue lines in 15px regular, 19px line spacing, stating the number.
- A single 1px ink leader line from the end of the dialogue to the ring around the key point.

Avoid: any font other than Courier Prime, color fills, gradients, shadows, rounded corners, legends in boxes, more than one red element type, and letterspacing tricks.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every string is Courier Prime, the title is uppercase with an underline matching its width, the red appears only on phase breaks, the dialogue block is centered and clear of the line, and the (CONT'D) mark sits at the bottom right.
