Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Salvage Tally" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the materials ledger of a reclamation yard on a restoration job. Dark oak ground, warm brick red against pale oak, one sturdy slab serif throughout, and stenciled category plates like marks sprayed on crates. Practical, warm and proud of what was saved.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #2A2119 (dark oak brown).
- Primary series (e.g. reclaimed): #B6543A (warm brick red). Comparison series (e.g. new): #D9C29A (pale oak).
- Main text: #EFE3CF (cream). Secondary text: #A8987F. Gridlines and rules: #3B2F25 (faint warm lines).
- Eyebrow and the share numbers use the brick red.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Bitter for everything. Eyebrow 11.5px 700 uppercase with 2.6px letter-spacing in brick red; title 700, 32px, cream, sentence case, stating the finding; subtitle 15px 400 #A8987F with measure and unit; y labels 12.5px #A8987F (unit as an italic "t" above the top label); bar value labels 13px 600 (cream on the primary series, #A8987F on the comparison); share numbers 24px 800 brick red; stencil labels 16px 800 uppercase with 4px letter-spacing in pale oak; legend 13.5px; small caption 10.5px 700 uppercase with 2px letter-spacing; source 12px and an italic 12px ledger note.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow y 52, title y 94, subtitle y 122.
- A caption row at y 148 to 162: "RECLAIMED SHARE BY WEIGHT" on the left, legend (14px squares) on the right.
- A share strip: each group's primary share printed as a 24px 800 percentage centered over its group at y 206, underlined by a 44px 1px brick rule 7px below, then a full-width 1px #3B2F25 rule at y 226.
- Plot x 110 to 904, baseline y 468, scale top at y 246. Footer rule at y 548, source (with totals) left and ledger note right at y 574.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal 1px #3B2F25 gridlines at round steps; y labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot; no y-axis line. A 1.2px #A8987F baseline. Bars start at zero.

Marks:
- Bar chart: grouped vertical columns, two per group, 62px wide with an 8px gap inside the pair, square corners, solid fills (primary left, comparison right). Values 8px above each column. Under each group a stencil plate: a dashed 1.2px pale oak outline at 55% opacity (10 on, 3 off), 30px tall, sized to the word, holding the category name; cut a 1.6px horizontal stencil bridge through the letters at mid-height in the background color.
- Line chart: two 2.6px lines (primary brick red, comparison pale oak) with straight segments and 6px square markers, values labeled at the ends; print the primary share per period in the same brick-red share strip above the plot, and use stencil plates for the x categories or periods.

Avoid: gradients, shadows, rounded corners, textures over the data, cool colors, a dual axis for the share (it lives in the strip, not on a second scale), and share numbers that float at different heights.

When you're done, render the chart and check that each share equals primary / (primary + comparison), the title's overall share matches the totals in the source line, the stencil bridges cut the letters without hiding them, and the plates are centered under their groups.
