Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Restoration Budget" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a conservation architect's final account for a heritage building. Pale sand paper, muted landscape colors, a classical display face over a friendly humanist sans. Calm, trustworthy and easy to follow from first estimate to final figure.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F1ECE2 (pale sand).
- Totals (start and end): #2F3B45 (deep slate). Increases: #5E7B4A (moss green). Decreases: #8C8A84 (stone gray). If the chart has no increases or decreases, moss is the main series color and slate the highlight.
- Eyebrow: #5E7B4A. Secondary text: #6D6961. Category labels: #3F3C37. Gridlines and rules: #DCD5C8.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Marcellus 400, 32px, #2F3B45 for the title only, sentence case, stating the finding with its number.
- Nunito Sans for everything else: eyebrow 11.5px 700 uppercase with 2.6px letter-spacing; subtitle 15.5px 400 #6D6961 with measure and unit; y labels 12px; value labels 15px 700 in the bar's own color (totals 17px 800 with the currency and unit, e.g. "£476k"); category labels 13.5px in two short centered lines (totals' first line 700 slate); bracket captions 11.5px 700 uppercase with 1.8px letter-spacing; legend 13px; source 12px; a right-aligned italic 12px document note in the footer.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow y 54, title y 96, subtitle y 124. Plot x 96 to 904, baseline y 462, top of scale at y 170.
- Legend row at y 540 (12px squares), 1px #DCD5C8 footer rule at y 556, source and document note at y 578.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal 0.8px #DCD5C8 gridlines every round step, y labels right-aligned 10px left of the plot including 0. No y-axis line. A 1.2px slate baseline. The value axis always starts at zero.

Marks:
- Bar chart (waterfall): square-cornered bars 60px wide (about 60% of the band). The first and last bars are totals in slate from zero; each step floats from the running total, moss for additions and stone gray for savings. A 0.9px slate dotted connector (2 on, 2 off) joins each bar's end level to the next bar. Values 9px above each bar ("+38", "−24"). Group consecutive additions and savings under thin 1px brackets (6px feet) above the bars with a caption giving the group sum ("ADDITIONS +£115k"). On the final bar print the change against the first total inside the bar top in page color ("+15.5%" 15px 800, "vs estimate" 11.5px), with a faint 0.6px slate reference line at the first total's level and a small 1px bracket just right of the final bar spanning the difference.
- Line chart: a 2.4px slate line with straight segments and 6px slate dots; shade periods that rose in 12% moss and periods that fell in 12% stone gray as vertical bands behind the line; label first and last values in 17px 800 slate, and mark the change between them with the same small bracket and percentage.

Avoid: red/green traffic-light colors, gradients, shadows, rounded corners, heavy borders, and truncated axes.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every step's running total is right, the final total equals start plus all steps, the bracket captions sum their bars, and the percentage matches (final - start) / start.
