Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Renewable Mix" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an energy outlook from a regional grid operator. Warm dark ground like turned soil, clear source colors everyone recognizes, and one white dashed line that tells the headline.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: a diagonal linear gradient from #2B221D (soil brown, top left) to #18181A (charcoal, bottom right).
- Sources, bottom to top, with the lighter hairline edge drawn on each layer's upper boundary:
  - Hydro #2FA39A, edge #7FD3CB, in-band label #0E2A28.
  - Wind #6FB7E8, edge #B9DEF6, label #10263A.
  - Solar #F2C94C, edge #FBE7A6, label #3A2C05.
  - Gas #8C8A86, edge #BDBBB6, label #1E1D1B.
  - Coal #46403B, edge #7A736C, label #EDE7DE.
- Renewable share line: #FFFFFF. Text: #F1ECE4. Secondary text: #A89F94. Source: #8A8279. Eyebrow: #F2C94C.

Typography (Google Fonts): Outfit only.
- Eyebrow 12px 600 uppercase with 2.6px letter-spacing. Title 30px 600 with -0.4px letter-spacing, stating the finding. Subtitle 16px 300 in #A89F94.
- Legend chips 13.5px 500. In-band labels 14px 600 ("Wind 21%"). Axis labels 12px 300 (y) and 13px 400 (x). End callout: 30px 700 white value, then 13px 400 and 13px 300 lines.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow at y 50, title at 92, subtitle at 120, legend chips at y 140 to 166.
- Plot from x 72 to 800, y 190 to 520, framed by a 1px white rectangle at 18% opacity. The right 140px holds the end callout for the renewable share.
- Source at the bottom left, y 576.

Axes and grid:
- No gridlines: the bands carry the structure. Percentage labels (0% to 100% every 25) right-aligned 10px left of the plot; year labels every two years 22px below it.

Marks:
- Line chart: a 100% stacked area built from smooth (monotone) boundaries, renewables at the bottom so the top of the renewables stack equals their combined share. Each layer is flat-filled, and every internal boundary gets a 1.2px hairline in the lighter edge color of the layer below it. Name each layer inside its band with its latest share, placed where the band is thickest. A 2.4px white dashed line (7 on, 5 off, round caps) traces the combined renewable share, with white dots (start r 4, end r 5, 2px charcoal ring) and the big end label to the right.
- Bar chart: 100% stacked columns, 60% of the band, in the same order and colors with 1.2px edge-color separators between segments and no rounding; the renewable share marked by a short white dashed tick across each column and joined column to column with the same dashed line.
- Legend: pill chips (26px tall, fully rounded, white at 6% fill with a white 12% border), each with a small icon in the source color: a droplet for hydro, a three-blade turbine for wind, a rayed sun for solar, a flame for gas, a rock for coal (drawn in #8E877F so it shows on dark).

Avoid: 3D, glows, gradients inside the bands, gridlines, bright saturated reds, and a boxed legend below the chart.

When you're done, render the chart and check that each year sums to 100%, the dashed line sits exactly on the renewables boundary, every in-band label fits inside its band with enough contrast, and the coal band still reads against the background.
