Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Redaction" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a released government document open in a PDF viewer. A scanned, warm off-white page, typewriter text, and bars drawn as black redaction blocks, with a red review stamp.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Viewer background: #2A2B2F. Toolbar: #1C1D20 with a 1px #3A3B40 bottom border. Thumbnail rail: #232428.
- Page: #F2EEE4, with a scan shadow at both edges (a horizontal gradient of #8A8474 from about 30% opacity to 0 over the outer 3% on each side) and a soft drop shadow (8px blur, 50% black).
- Redaction blocks: #141414. Page text: #2B2A27; secondary page text #77736A; margin line numbers #A29D90.
- Stamp: #C0392B. Current-page highlight in the rail: #8FA8CF.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- IBM Plex Mono for everything on the page: running head 11px uppercase with 0.6px letter-spacing; title 18px 600 with a section number ("C.7") and a hanging indent; subtitle 13px; row labels 13.5px; values 13.5px (600 for the largest); notes 12.5px; source 11px.
- IBM Plex Sans for viewer chrome: file name 13px 500 #D6D4CF, page indicator "PAGE 7 OF 12" 11.5px 600 with 1.4px letter-spacing in a 140 x 22 rounded box, secondary controls 12.5px #A9A7A1.

Layout:
- A 44px toolbar across the top, a 150px thumbnail rail on the left (four page thumbnails, the current one full-bright with a 2px highlight outline and a bold page number, others in #C9C5BB), and the page from x = 196, y = 70, 700px wide, running off the bottom edge as if scrolled.
- On the page: running head and "OFFICIAL" at the top, a 0.8px rule, the title, subtitle, then the rows. Line numbers in the page margin, right-aligned about 34px in from the page edge.

Axes and grid:
- No axes and no gridlines. Values are typed after each block, 10px to the right.

Marks:
- Bar chart: horizontal bars as solid #141414 redaction rectangles, 20px tall on a 36px row pitch, starting at a common left edge after the typed labels. Roughen the edges slightly with a displacement filter (fractal noise at 0.8, scale 2.2) so they look hand-applied with a marker.
- Line chart: a 3px #141414 line with square caps and the area under it filled with redaction black at 90%, drawn as if the region below the data were blacked out; points marked by typed values above, in mono.
- Stamp: rotated -9 degrees, a 208 x 60 box with a 3px outer and 1px inner #C0392B border, "RELEASED IN PART" in 19px 600 mono and a reference line in 9.5px, at 86% opacity with the same roughening filter. Place it in empty space; it may overlap a line of text slightly.

Avoid: any color on the page except the red stamp, rounded bars, glossy UI, real agency names or seals, and redaction blocks with visible text underneath.

When you're done, render the chart and check that block lengths are proportional to the values, the typed values never touch the blocks, the stamp covers no data, and the toolbar text fits.
