Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Rebased Index" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a friendly economics explainer that talks to a general reader. Warm paper, a conversational headline, a plain-language deck, a few hand-placed arrows and one short "what this means" box. Clear rather than clever.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #FBF3E4 (warm cream) across the whole canvas.
- Series, in order of importance: #D8452B (tomato red), #0B6A74 (deep teal), #C9950F (mustard). For the mustard series' text label use the darker #9A7400 so it reads on cream.
- Context lines or de-emphasized series: #8C877D (mid gray).
- Ink (title, deck, annotations, the 100 reference line): #2B2724. Muted text (axis labels, source): #6F685F.
- Gridlines: #E6DCCB. Explainer box fill: #F3E7D0 with a 1.2px #2B2724 border.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Fraunces 700 for the title (34px, -0.4px letter-spacing, sentence case, stating the finding in plain words). Fraunces 600 at 14px for the sentence inside the explainer box.
- Work Sans for everything else: the deck 16px 400 in ink, two lines at most, explaining the finding and why everything starts at 100; a small axis caption "INDEX, 2010 = 100" 11px 600 uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing in muted; tick labels 12px muted; end-label names 16px 700 in the series color; end-label values 13px 500 in ink written as "168 (+68%)"; annotations 13px, first line 600 and second line 400; source 11.5px muted.

Layout:
- 56px left margin. Title baseline near y 66, deck lines at about 100 and 122, the axis caption at 154, plot from y 176 to 520 and x 72 to 780.
- The right 150px hold direct end labels (name above, value below) 16px right of each line's last point. No legend.
- The explainer box sits in an empty corner of the plot (here the upper left, 268 x 84 px, 8px radius): a tomato "WHAT THIS MEANS" kicker (11px 700, 1.4px letter-spacing) and one or two lines of Fraunces translating the chart into everyday consequences, with the number computed from the data.
- Source line at the bottom left, around y 580.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines only, 1px #E6DCCB, every 20 index points. Y labels right-aligned 10px left of the plot. X labels every three years, 24px below the plot.
- A bold 2.5px ink reference line at 100 across the full plot, its "100" tick label in 13px 700 ink.
- A dashed (3 on, 4 off) 1px #8C877D vertical line marking the base year, with a 6.5px ink dot on the 100 line at the base year and a small label such as "2010: everything = 100".

Marks:
- Line chart: every series rebased so the base year = 100 (value / base value x 100). Thick 5px lines with round caps and joins, smoothed with a monotone cubic curve that never overshoots the data. A 6px end dot in the series color with a 2.5px cream ring. No markers along the line.
- Bar chart: show index values as vertical bars rising from or falling below the bold 100 line (not from zero), 28px wide with square corners, in the same series colors; grouped bars per period sit 4px apart. Value labels 12px 600 above the bar ends; the 100 line stays on top of the bars.

Labels and annotation:
- Two or three hand-placed annotations at key turns: a two-line note in Work Sans and a curved 1.6px ink arrow (a quadratic curve) with an open chevron arrowhead pointing precisely at the turn. Place notes in empty space; an arrow may cross one line, the text never does.
- All percentages in the deck, labels and box must be computed from the data.

Avoid: a legend box, markers on every point, thin 1 or 2px lines, dark or saturated backgrounds, jargon in the deck, gradients and shadows.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every series starts exactly at 100 in the base year, the end labels do not collide, each arrowhead lands on the turn it describes, and the numbers in the deck and the box match the data.
