Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Reading Room" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an old college library at night. Deep green walls, a warm pool of lamplight over the title, cream type, a thin brass rule and a single gold line. Archival, quiet and unhurried.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Background: #13261E (library green), with a lamplight glow: a radial gradient centered just above the top edge (x 480, y -30), radius about 520px stretched 1.25x horizontally and 0.8x vertically, #F4C979 at 30% opacity in the center, 10% at 45%, fading to 0.
- Highlighted periods (exam weeks): #0C1914 bands at 85% opacity.
- Data line, markers and area: #D9B45A (gold). Area fill: a vertical gradient of the same gold from 34% opacity at the top to 0 at the baseline.
- Brass accent for the eyebrow, rules, baseline, ticks and band labels: #B8955A.
- Primary text: #EFE6CF (cream). Secondary text: #B3AE9A.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Cormorant Garamond with lining figures: title 600 36px cream, centered, stating the finding; value callouts 600 20px cream (e.g. "13.1 h"); footnote and source italic 15px #B3AE9A.
- Karla: eyebrow 600 11px uppercase with 3.5px letter-spacing in brass; subtitle 15px #B3AE9A centered with measure, unit and span; tick labels 12px; band labels 600 10px uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing in brass (small-caps feel); period labels under the axis 600 11px uppercase with 2.4px letter-spacing in cream.

Layout:
- Everything in the heading is centered under the lamp: eyebrow at y 40, title at y 84, a 120px 1px brass rule at y 102 with a small 6px brass diamond at its center, subtitle at y 130.
- Plot from x 96 to 888, y 170 to 470. The y-unit ("HOURS") sits above the tick labels at the top left.
- Footer: a 0.8px brass rule at 50% opacity at y 548, then an italic footnote left (explaining any gaps and stating the key averages) and italic "Source: ..." right, both at y 574.

Axes and grid:
- Gridlines are dotted cream rules: 1px #EFE6CF at 28% opacity, dash 1 on 4 off with round caps. No gridline at zero; instead a 1px brass baseline.
- No y-axis line. X ticks 5px in brass at a few round values; a brass divider line dropping below the axis between periods (e.g. terms), with the period names centered under each span.
- Highlighted periods as full-height darker bands (#0C1914) extending 6px above the plot, labeled above in brass small caps.

Marks:
- Line chart: a 2.4px gold line with straight segments and small square markers (6.4px, gold fill, 1.2px green outline) at every point, over the fading gold area. Break the line and area across real gaps. Label the peak of each highlighted period with its value in the serif, to the left of the point.
- Bar chart: slim gold bars (about 55% of the band) with a vertical gold gradient from full color at the top to 45% opacity at the base, square corners, highlighted periods drawn over the darker bands with their values in the serif above.

Avoid: bright or saturated colors, pure white, heavy gridlines, sans-serif titles, drop shadows, and a glow strong enough to wash out the title.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the lamplight glow is visible but subtle, the dotted rules stay faint, band labels do not collide with the title block, and the ratio or averages in the title and footnote are arithmetically right.
