Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Read Depth" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a genome browser coverage track exported for a methods figure. Technical, exact and quiet: monospaced coordinates, a single steel-blue data mark and red reserved strictly for what falls short of a threshold.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF. A coordinate bar under the subtitle in #F3F6F9.
- Data area: #8FB3D9 (light steel blue) with a 1.2px #3E6E9E edge on top.
- Shortfall: #F4D3D0 (pale red wash) for full-height bands behind stretches below the threshold; inside those bands the area itself turns #E7A29B.
- Threshold and anything flagged: #C8453C.
- Ink (title, axis baseline, gene model): #1F2A36. Secondary text: #6B7682. Gridlines: #E6EAEF.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- DM Mono for everything. Title 500, 27px, -0.6px letter-spacing, stating the finding. Subtitle 400, 14px #6B7682 with measure, unit and bin size.
- Coordinate bar text 12px (region in 500 ink on the left, summary stats in 400 #6B7682 on the right, separated by " | ").
- Track labels ("DEPTH", "GENE") 500, 11px, uppercase, 1.6px letter-spacing, #6B7682. Axis labels 11px #6B7682; shortfall labels 500 11px in #C8453C.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Title at the top, subtitle below, then a full-width 28px-tall coordinate bar with 3px radius.
- The main track occupies the middle (about 220px tall) with y labels at its left, a coordinate ruler right under it, then a separate gene track about 80px below the ruler.
- Footer: a 1px #E6EAEF rule, "Source: ..." on the left and a small square-swatch legend (depth, below threshold, exon) on the right.

Axes and grid:
- Y labels as "0x", "20x", "40x", "60x" right-aligned 10px left of the plot; 1px #E6EAEF horizontal gridlines; a 1px ink baseline.
- X is a genomic ruler: 1px ticks every 1 kb (3.5px long, #9AA4AE), major ticks every 5 kb (7px long, ink) labeled "48.205 Mb" 21px below the baseline.

Marks:
- Line chart: a stepped area (horizontal run per bin, vertical risers, no smoothing) filled #8FB3D9 with a 1.2px #3E6E9E edge. Compute runs below the threshold from the data; give each a full-height #F4D3D0 band behind the plot, fill the area inside it #E7A29B, and label it above the plot ("1.3 kb < 20x"). The threshold is a 1.4px #C8453C line dashed 6 on, 4 off, with a white tag at the right edge: 118 x 18, 2px radius, 1px red border, "MIN DEPTH 20x" in 500 10.5px red.
- Bar chart: square-cornered columns in #8FB3D9 with a 1px #3E6E9E top edge and no gaps wider than 1px, the same threshold line and tag; bars under the threshold turn #E7A29B and get a #F4D3D0 band behind them.
- Gene track (or any annotation track under the chart): a 1.2px ink intron line with open chevrons (1.1px, 5px wide) every ~26px pointing in the strand direction, exon boxes 22px tall for coding parts and 10px tall for untranslated ends, all #1F2A36, exons touched by a shortfall in #C8453C over a #F4D3D0 band. Exon numbers ("E4") in 11px 32px below the line, red and 500 for flagged exons. Gene name 500 13px, right-aligned 10px left of the model.

Avoid: smoothing the coverage, gradients, shadows, rounded bars, more than one data color, and red anywhere that is not a shortfall.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every labeled shortfall length matches the data, flagged exons really overlap a shortfall, the step edge sits exactly on the area, and the ruler labels at the ends do not clip.
