Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Rarefaction" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a figure from a soil ecology paper. Warm paper, bookish serif headline, calm muted earth-and-water hues grouped by habitat, every line named at its end.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FAF8F3 (warm off-white).
- Four group hues: #467A3A (forest green), #4A73C0 (wetland blue), #B8892C (grassland ochre), #A8483A (cropland rust). Two series per group share a hue: the first solid, the second dashed.
- Ink: #2B2926. Secondary text: #77716A. Gridlines and legend border: #E7E2D8. Reference rule: #B9B2A6.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Gentium Book Plus 700, 29px, ink, for the title, stating the finding in sentence case.
- Assistant for everything else: subtitle 15px #77716A; axis titles 600 13px ink; tick labels 13px #77716A with thousands separators; end labels 600 13px in the series color; legend header 700 11px uppercase with 1.4px letter-spacing; footnote 12px.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Title at the top, subtitle 30px below it, the y-axis title left-aligned above the plot.
- The plot runs from x 96 to about x 792, leaving a right gutter of about 110px for end labels.
- A compact legend box (300 x 72, 1px #E7E2D8 border, page fill) in an empty lower-right corner of the plot, grouped by habitat in two columns, with "solid = site 1, dashed = site 2" at its top right.
- A one-line footnote at the bottom left beginning "Source: ...".

Axes and grid:
- 1px #E7E2D8 horizontal gridlines at round steps; no vertical grid; a 1px ink baseline; no y-axis line.
- X tick labels as "10k", "20k" centered 22px below the baseline, the axis title centered 46px below.

Marks:
- Line chart: 2.4px lines with round caps, smooth monotone curves, dashed replicates 7 on 4 off. A 3.2px filled dot at each line's end. A 1.5px #B9B2A6 vertical rule at the analysis cutoff with a 600 12.5px #77716A label at its top, and an open dot (r 3.6, page fill, 1.8px stroke in the series color) where each line crosses it. End labels sit 14px right of the plot, joined to the end dot by a 0.8px leader at 55% opacity, nudged at least 17px apart vertically.
- Bar chart: grouped columns clustered by habitat, the two sites side by side with 2px gaps, the first solid and the second in the same hue with 45-degree 1.5px page-colored hatching, square corners, values above in 600 12px in the series color; the cutoff becomes a 1.5px #B9B2A6 horizontal reference line with its label.

Avoid: bright saturated colors, a legend listing all eight series individually, markers at every point, heavy frames and gradients.

When you're done, render the chart and check that end labels do not overlap, dashed and solid replicates remain distinguishable, the legend does not cover any line, and the title claim holds for the data.
